Like Where Wizards Stay Up Late, the book Hafner co-wrote on the origins of the Internet, Cyberpunk is informative, well-written, and entertaining. The story of Morris, who became infamous for unleashing a crippling worm that brought the Internet to a grinding standstill, is still as relevant and ominous today as it was at the time. The space devoted to Mitnick is a must-read companion to either Takedown or The Fugitive Game. Many of the stories surrounding the Dark Side Hacker, such as the story of his Norad break-in, are called into question in Cyberpunk, making this book a good launching pad for many different accounts of the Mitnick legend. The portrait of the two members of the Chaos Computer Club is a memorable look into the minds of the younger generation of computer hackers. Before you check out any book of this genre, read Cyberpunk.

In these three portraits of contemporary computer "outlaws," Hafner and Markoff have done an outstanding job of explaining the technology misused, as well as writing a true account that is as exciting to read as any Ludlum novel. From Kevin Mitnick, the former Southern California "phone phreak" who hacked his way into Digital Equipment's inner sanctum to the West German quartet who tapped into Lawrence Berkeley Lab and sold software to the KGB to Robert Mathis, the former Cornell graduate student who loosed a virus that brought the mighty Internet to its knees, the authors intelligently analyze the social and technical considerations involved in these episodes. This book can be read solely for entertainment--it's that engrossing. But there are also many very important issues and questions raised as well. Highly recommended.

By two distinguished journalists who knew little about hackers but could recognize a great story when they saw one, this is one of the more important early books that erroneously labeled hackers as criminals and electronic criminals as hackers.

If your looking for evil hackers mis-leading information and untrue stories. Then by all means read this book. But if your looking for a better account of Kevin Mitnick the most botched story in this book try The Fugitive Game by Littman it's much more acurate.
