Gr 3-5--Two books that feature five major festivals in their respective countries. Puerto Rico presents the Calle San Sebastian festival, the fiesta for Santiago Apostol, the celebrations that take place during the Las Navidades, and the patriotic festivals of Grito de Lares in Puerto Rico and Puerto Rican Day in the United States. Germany describes St. Martin's Day, Karneval, St. Nikolaus Day and Christmas, Oktoberfest, and Walpurgis Night. In both titles, the language is clear, simple, and descriptive, and the bright, colorful photographs correlate well with the texts, although occasionally a caption or the narrative will allude to something that is not depicted. Unfortunately, the organization is poor, as the festivals are not presented in chronological or alphabetical order. The craft activities and recipes that conclude both books are clearly described and include safety warnings. However, the rationale for the choice of the recipe offered is not apparent. Nonessential purchases but possibly of use as supplementary material.

As a German and a lecturer for intercultural communication at a German university, I was extremely interested in reading this book. It gives a very broad und expertised introduction into German politics, history, culture, economy and society. The author is really a professional and even in details he delivers exact information. But there are some aspects which lead me to some critical comments:
In the first place, the book is not up-to-date. The autor focusses on Germany in the years 2000 - 2005. The leadership of Angela Merkel is hardly taken into consideration and persons like Sabine Christiansen, Steffi Graf, Joschka Fischer or Jan Ullrich are told to be of great public importance - though they have already retired from former functions or activities.
Furthermore, the author shows - in several cases - a very one-sided view on Germany society. Referring to some personal impressions or exeriences, he decribes "the Germans" as arrogant (p. 63: "Does all this mean that Germans are arrogant?...") , the German society full of aggression (p. 63 - citation of a South African and his impression: "This society is so aggressive. It starts to get to you right away.") and he recognizes anti-Americanism (p. 85: "A peculiar strain of German xenophobia is anti-Americanism".)
For me as a German, it is not suitable to judge his experiences he made in Germany as a non-German. But I invite everybody who wants to come to Germany: Create your own experience! After reading this book, I personally got the impression that the author intended to bring a "CultureShock!" to his readers. But it depends on many different aspects if one can succeed in getting along with "Germany and the Germans" - eg. personal attitude, education, social integration.
I am convinced that most Germans are willing to welcome all people who are ready to open up to social and cultural structures and demands - and that it is worthwhile living in Germany and with the Germans.

I wasn't expecting anything bad based on the reviews I had read when I bought the book, but I still got positively surprised with its quality. You'll find valuable information in a well-written text with a personal touch from the author and a great layout.

Dieses Buch ist für Viel-Reisende hervorragend geeignet. Man muss zwar Englisch gut lesen können, aber wenn dem so ist, erhält man ein ungeschminktes Bild davon, wie wir Deutschen in der angelsächsischen Welt gesehen werden. Und manches ist auch deshalb originell und witzig, weil soooo unwahrscheinlich wahr. Also wirklich originelle und entspannende Lektüre.
