Welcome to the Second Edition
A lot has changed since I researched the 1st edition of Lonely Planet's Cuba guide in 1996. For example, people all across Cuba have begun renting private rooms in their homes to foreigners and specific casa particular listings are now provided throughout the book. In the main introduction I've provided a detailed explanation of the strict licensing regulations applicable to this sector so visitors can know exactly what is going on. I've also listed private restaurants or paladares wherever I found them, although these come and go very quickly for reasons disclosed in the book's introduction. The new hard currency bus routes are also described in the guide and I re-researched all the regular rail and road services intended for the local population but also accessible to visitors. All of the official government hotels were revisited and their rates and facilities/failings updated. The scope of the book has been greatly increased with much more detailed information on the five provinces of Oriente. Those familiar with the 1st edition should look again at the economy and recent history sections which have been completely revised. When writing about an area as controversial as Cuba it's impossible to make everyone happy but I've tried to provide my readers with facts which will help them evaluate what they're actually seeing on the ground. A guidebook is only a tool: how you use it is up to you.
