Noreth, however, is not who she seems; 13-year-old Maewen Singer has been transported from present-day Dalemark back 200 years and now, as Noreth, is being stalked by unknown assassins. Treachery, mystery, humor, and magic abound in this intriguing, well-crafted fantasy. Jones' quirky characters are so finely portrayed that readers will feel they know them. Because of the incredible wealth of Dalemark history and myth Jones weaves through this story, it really is difficult to read as a stand-alone novel, though a 62-page guide to Dalemark is provided. The series is so entertaining, though, that librarians will want to purchase the entire set. Chris Sherman

Grade 6-9?While this fantasy is rich with fascinating scenes and details, it's unlikely that those who haven't read the first three books in the series will be willing to unravel the labyrinthine plot. The story's engaging first part concerns Mitt, a sensitive, courageous young man who speaks his mind. An earl and countess assign him the unpleasant task of murdering Noreth, a teen who believes it's her destiny to seek the ring, cup, and sword that will allow her to unify the land and become queen. The author then leaps ahead 200 years and introduces Maewen, 13, who is sent back in time to impersonate Noreth. Maewen is quite clueless about her purpose, but adjusts to the strangeness of being in the past and on a quest remarkably quickly. Her followers accept her as Noreth without suspicion?proving Wynne Jones's observation that people see what they want to see. There is an interesting uncertainty about whether the directive voice Maewen hears in her head is good or bad (it turns out to be that of the evil magician, Kankredin), and the concept of the Undying (godlike humans) is intriguing, as is the powerful role given to musicians. Some of the characters are very real and likable, but the events and reasons that sustain them are rather mind-boggling and tenuous. The moments of wittiness and tension make reading the novel a pleasure at times, but there is an omnipresent scattered feeling that results in a somewhat baffling whole. I liked most of the book, but I wish the author had writen another one to tell us what happened to Maewen. Some of the questions that the book left me asking were: did maewen ever see mitt again, did she find cenoreth, would cenoreth help her and send her into the past again to stay with mitt, is maewen of the undying? I think that questions like these should be answered ni another book if the author is any good.

Someone, the other day, asked me why I read fantasy, and the example of this book jumped instantly to my mind. Diana Wynne Jones' brilliant books are always at their apex of brilliance the second time one reads them, and I happen to have very recently read this one for the second time. Now, I myself did not love the previous books in the Dalemark quartet quite so much as I have other DWJ books, but this one is truly great. It has fantastic characters and a wonderful plot, as well as, I think, the single most intriguing conversation I've ever read (hint - it's with Alk and you can't understand its sheer brilliance until you get further on). Perhaps the reason why it becomes even better the second time is that one realizes upon reading it just how much of the shocking plot twists were presaged. One of them, I think, can be figured out completely before it's revealed, but is so unbelievable that no one will ever do it, IMHO. The book also has considerable depth, as well as fun. Try to figure out whether or not time travel to the past can alter the future - as well as what all the main characters believe. Intriguing! After closing this book for the second time, the two words that came first to my mind were "inherently cool." And it is.

Well, I must say, the first three were okay. I don't know, I don't think I needed to have read them at all. In fact, I first read Drowned Ammet, then the Spellcoats, then this book, then Cart and the Cwidder...and I understood the Crown of Dalemark fine without reading the Cart and Cwidder. This though, was THE most awesome book! Looking at this I now remember what the cover of the book looks like; mine has long since been ripped off because of being shoved in and out of my locker and carrying it to classes. I will never get sick of this book, it is, without a sliver of a doubt, among the best books I have ever read. I think I say that for a lot of the books I read, but this one I mean it. The ending though...I'm not saying it was bad, it was excellent! But I hate endings like that...it's a matter of personal opinion, I think. So PLEASE let there, in the future, be a sequel to this book! I know it's a quartet, but I want to know what happens! Oh well, if you havn't read any of the series yet, I would suggest you read this book first. If you really enjoy it, go on to read the other three to get more detail on the characters. This book was THE BEST!

DWJ... when she is good, she is very very good
But this, I'm afraid, is not among her best. Tying off the Dalemark series years later, long after the original readers (this one included) had grown up, this book is a little... Lesen Sie weiter...

This has to be one of the best books that I have read in a long time! It ties all of the previous books (#1 - Cart and Cwidder, #2 - Drowned Ammet, and #3 - The Spellcoats)... Lesen Sie weiter...
