Cute, Fun and Amazing 15. Dezember 2009
Von L. Vianello - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
I've always wanted to go to Japan and explore Tokyo's streets; with this book, I almost felt like I was there. Not only it shows an amazing variety of cafés, bars and restaurants, but each and everyone of those is described in such a fun way, you feel like you're reading a letter from a friend of yours.

It has certainly opened up my curiosity, and it has taught me a little bit more about japanese society and subcultures and how Tokyo works. My appetite for this city has grown deeper and I just can't wait to visit each and every of this places personally.

If you're looking to expand your urban knowledge about Tokyo, "Crazy, Wacky Theme Restaurants. Tokyo" surely wont dissapoint you, and it's a must have in your coffee table.

Really disappointingly poor quality photos and reviews 14. Februar 2012
Von B. Crosby - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe|Von Amazon bestätigter Kauf
For $18.27 on Amazon, this book was a rip off. It's 95 pages and the photos are really awful like some teenager took them all with an iPhone. The composition and quality of the photos, actually a drunk teenager seemed to take them, most are blurry. Just awful. The text was worse. La Carmina is pretentious and boring and her weird poses in the book make it look like she botoxed her entire face, no expression whatsoever, just weird. She talks down to her dinner guests bc they're not enjoying themselves. Who the f k would enjoy a watered down, sugary cocktail with little alcohol. It's a good guide to the cafe's two of which are closed, but I'm sure it would be cheaper to just go online to some online place that talks about Japanese theme restaurants. She doesn't even really cover all the menu items and her photos of the menu's are out of focus so you can't even see what's on the menu. Just an awful little cruddy book for $18.27 don't buy it. But I love the idea of wacky theme restaurants. F k you Anthony Bourdeain for introducing me to this La Carmina and her stupid book. you owe me $18.27 a hole!

Poor quality production, not that useful 19. November 2011
Von Aussiemystic - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe|Von Amazon bestätigter Kauf
This is a very disappointing book, both in pictures and words.

The book is essentially a (mostly) pictorial guide to a number of unusual themed restaurants in and around Tokyo, several of which I've been to. While the book may be good to give you a general idea of places, it falls somewhere between a guidebook and a set of travel articles, and doesn't really succed as either. The text often contains personal anecdotes that may be colourful but don't give you too much of an idea about the restaurant itself, and the sort of food it serves.

The photographs are mostly poor quality and look like personal "happy snaps". Most are closeup, often poorly lit photos of food or faces that don't give a good idea of the overall atmosphere of the restaurant. Okay, many of the restaurants are dark but maybe if the author had at least approached them for some publicity shots they would have been happy to help out. Even the cover photograph is a poor quality reproduction and it looks like someone has decided to add some stickers on the front to disguise the fact that it's grainy and blurry.

On the plus side, the book contains useful information that you can use if you want to visit yourself, such as opening hours, phone number for reservations, website and street address (although a small map would have been good given Japan's sometimes confusing address system). It would also have been good to know whether non-Japanese speakers are well catered for in any of these restaurants. I would suggest using this book as an introduction to the subject but if you think you might be interested in going, I'd do a bit more research.
