Pressestimmen

'A Christie-style closed-circle detective novel.' -- Literary Review on Cradle to Grave 'Loved it' -- Val McDermid on THE DARKNESS AND THE DEEP 'An unalloyed pleasure - an intelligent, character-driven crime novel.' -- Andrew Taylor on COLD IN THE EARTH 'Skilfully plotted and well-paced ... This book is a delight, from its leisurely start to the moving and unexpected finish.' -- Guardian on THE DARKNESS AND THE DEEP 'Interesting, atmospheric and - I predict - televisual' -- Literary Review on THE DARKNESS AND THE DEEP '[Aline Templeton] has demonstrated that, just when we thought Scotland was saturated with detectives, a strong woman can elbow her way in and find a unique niche.' -- Scotsman on COLD IN THE EARTH 'It is always a pleasure to read Aline Templeton, but THE DARKNESS AND THE DEEP must surely be her best book to date. Aline's characters are so beautifully drawn ...' -- J Wallis Martin 'A compelling read.' -- Margaret Yorke on COLD IN THE EARTH 'Templeton can always be relied on to provide a well-written, cleverly plotted, old-fashioned whodunit.' -- The Times

4.0 von 5 Sternen Templeton is an excellent writer who deserves a much wider audience 10. Juli 2011
Von L. J. Roberts - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
First Sentence: She had no idea how long she had been walking, though such light as there was had begun fading into an ominous twilight.

DI Marjory Fleming is back from suspension and finds tension within her team. A major rainstorm has caused a landslide onto Rosscarron Cottages. One of the tenants has a past she'd rather keep hidden but it's difficult since the cottages are on the land of wealthy Gillis Crozier, whose family is directly involved in her past. What starts as a trip to the area by DI Fleming and her 1st officer Sgt. Tam MacNee, nearly costs them their lives and leads them to the investigation of a murder.

Ms. Templeton excels at capturing the reader with a very dramatic opening even though, at that point, you don't know the characters, their background or relationship to the story. That's a sign of effective writing. It sets the tone for a story that is dramatic and tense, which is maintained throughout the story.

There is such a strong sense of place established by detailed descriptions that it becomes another character in the book. Yet it is the characters that drive the story. Readers new to the series are introduced to Marge and Tam with their backgrounds and relationship, as well as to the other characters. Even those characters who are not likable are made real, alive and, in many cases, sympathetic to us.

The plot is complicated. It is rather hard to follow, in the beginning; similar to a jigsaw puzzle tumbled out on a table with a finished picture being provided. But piece by piece, the bits are brought together and Templeton allows the image to emerge. Along with the plot, comes effectively conveyed, strong emotion, secrets being kept, the devastation of one who is innocent being thought guilty, the malice of real sociopathy, and a very good plot twist.

What is not here is Templeton's trademark wry humor, aside from a reference to "Lord of the Rings." While I missed it, I also understood it as it would not have worked with this particularly story. Good for her.

Templeton is an excellent writer who deserves a much wider audience.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Acceptable light reading 24. Oktober 2014
Von Khirul - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
I had read one of Templeton's stand-alone mysteries and found it excellent. This book, from what is called a "thriller" series, was more action-packed but less well plotted and less well written.

Though still an acceptable light read, there is too much violence, too many unlikely coincidences, and too much reliance on mere dumb luck to save the protagonist to make a satisfying mystery. The police procedure shows too little controlled method and too little appreciation for why correct procedure is important to us all.

Many of the characters are convincingly real human beings (Tam MacNee is a masterpiece); but unfortunately, not the leading character, a jarring mix of comic book wonder woman, admirable leader, and screaming groupie.

And much of the writing is truly fine, but many passages are long strings of cliche crying out for editing.

Loved it, but no surprise, I do like the Marjory Fleming mysteries!
5.0 von 5 Sternen Top-notch Scots/UK murder thriller! 22. Juni 2014

This book was so well written, so baffling up to the very last page, that I just couldn't put it down. This was my first Marjory Fleming novel - 6th in the order written - and I'll certain to be reading the first five in order now. Fleming is a great character - and Templeton is a fine crafter of characters, plots and suspense. The Scotland use of language is terrific - my only complaint was that a "Barbour jacket" was translated as "Barber jacket" twice in the book! Quite a small complaint, however. It felt like a roller-coaster that seemed to be never-ending - and I certainly enjoyed the ride! I hope that Templeton will gain a wider US audience. She deserves it.
4.0 von 5 Sternen Very Good but too "cosie" 12. Juni 2014

This is my second Templeton novel. I enjoyed both of the books I read but I'm unlikely to read the complete Margery Fleming series, maybe not another Templeton book. "Cradle To Grave" occurs in a coastal area of Scotland just outside the fictitious town of Kirkluce. A body is discovered following a mudslide which severely damages 4 or 5 homes. Soon there is another body found on the grounds of a nearby estate, and not long after a third victim is found near a cheap apartment inhabited by a suspect in the first two cases. Then there's another unresolved murder case that goes back a few years and then....Well, you get the picture - we're not lacking for murder victims here. And there are a lot of suspects, and a lot of cops and a lot of theories of the crime. I've found Templeton's books to be very well written. Those readers who particularly like detailed murder mysteries with all kinds of clues and misdirection will particularly like C2G. But after a while I got tired of all the theories of the hour on who did what to whom and why, especially why. And the characters didn't really turn me on. I have no doubt that they are all true to life depictions of people that solve crimes in real life, warts and all, but they just wound up boring me especially for the last quarter of the book. This book was too reminiscent of an Agatha Christie story, and I'm not an AC fan. Towards the last third I just wanted C2G to end.
