For many, Scripture falls into the same category as Shakespeare: valued and enjoyed, but seldom understood. Scripture is not, however, out of reach. The ability to identify the main themes of any passage is a skill you can learn, even as you seek to apply its truth to your own life. Covenant and Kingdom: The DNA of the Bible provides guidance for the path it will take to develop, to the fullest, your own individual relationship with God.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Help in Reading One's Bible and Looking for Relationship and Responsiblity 29. September 2012
Von Dr. Robert J. Vajko - Veröffentlicht auf

If you have been looking for a way to see the Bible as a whole, here is a book for you. Mike Breen, a man with a vision for discipleship, explains the main theme of Scripture as a "double helix of spiritual DNA running through the Bible" (xii).

Breen calls this double helix "covenant and kingdom" and finds these two themes interwoven throughout the Bible. The basic idea of covenant has to do with "our relationship with God and then our relationship with everyone else" (xv). The basic idea of kingdom has to do with "the way in which the Bible describes and defines responsibility" (xvi).

So these two themes provide a way of looking at any given section of Scripture. In chapter 17 "Tools for Interpretation," Breen gives questions to ask in order to determine if the basic theme is covenant or kingdom. Then, as we determine this, the covenant perspective shows us some truths and the kingdom perspective other truths.

In some final thoughts, the author points out that even though the main themes of the Bible are covenant and kingdom, one needs to looks also at the "point of view of author, place, date and purpose along with other scholarly insights" (247).

This reviewer has found that having in mind these two themes encourage seeing both grace (from the covenant theme) and responsibility (from the kingdom theme).

However, there are many views as to the unity of the Bible. Covenant theology has one approach and dispensational theology another. Breen's approach is another. This double helix of covenant and kingdom is helpful but should not be imposed on every part of the Bible. For example, it is difficult to find these themes in the book of Job which says little about either of these themes as well as other wisdom literature. This wisdom literature is notorious for creating a problem for one wanting to find unity in the Old Testament.

Having said that, this reviewer will find greater help in reading through the whole Bible and looking for whether God is speaking to me about covenant identity or kingdom responsibility.

Sometimes a theological degree is actually detrimental in helping regular people understand scripture. Those of us who are "professional Christians" complicate things with nuances and metaphors, when most people just want to know why the Scripture matters and how it applies to their daily, overstressed and hyper-busy lives. MIke Breen does a great job at providing a way to look at Scripture that puts the text into a understandable context that is consistent with good theology. Covenant and Kingdom does a great job at making complex texts accessible.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Amazing Perspective! 14. April 2014

I cannot say enough about this book. The author's explanation of the covenants, both historically and symbolically, allowed me to have a huge change of perspective about the intimacy that I may be able to have with God. His focus on the introduction of the Kingdom through Christ was just as illuminating. I have a much clearer and more joyful understanding of my identity in Christ and the wonderful role that I can play as a better imagebearer; for the flourishing of the Kingdom and of others!

This is a fantastic overview of the Bible that will help people become familiar with the major themes of the Bible. Breen's book is about 2 major themes we see in the Scriptures. The first is Covenant, or our relationship with God and others. The second is Kingdom, or our responsibility as believers. Breen gives a good overview of these themes, and then the bulk of the book is him walking is through the Scriptures to see how these themes play out. As a pastor, I will be keeping copies of this on my shelf for new believers, and am also considering running a Sunday School class to teach this to others as well. Highly recommend!

Having grown up in the church you expact to have a good understanding of the bible. I was very happy with the perspective Mike Breen takes on God's plan, expectations of us and how to understand our purpose. It's great read for new and older Christians as it opens your eyes to some of the main themes of the bible. Very practical...
