Like the Carroll volume above, this edition of the seasoned veteran provides a new twist. Crane's Badge was originally serialized in the New York Press in 1894, a year before the story was published in novel form. This volume offers both the slightly different serial version and the finished work. Though every library no doubt has numerous copies of Red Badge, academic and public libraries supporting American literature curricula should pop for this one, too, especially at the price.

A young Yankee soldier experiences every emotion on the battlefield, maturing in the process. Extraordinarily descriptive language, easy to visualize. Amazinglyly, Stephen Crane was 29 when he wrote this book and never experienced war.
Format:Taschenbuch
The story of a civil war soldier and his first experience on the battlefield. A single battle is portrayed, in which the main character develops: first he is very eager for battle, but once battle commences, he flees from his unit on the battlefield, only to come back at a later stage to fight like a maniac.
Written from the perspective of the ordinary soldier, it shows that many orders and redeployments make no sense for the men at all, as only a small fraction of the battlefield can be overviewed by them.
The book is hard to read for an european reader, I guess even some american readers struggle with the pre-1900 language and the soldiers slang of the era.
A short book giving a vivid account of a civil war battle, from the soldiers view. To be recommended for readers with some interest in american history, but for all others think twice before you read it.

If you didn't read this in high school, you should have. What motivates an inexperienced soldier faced with the horrors of battle? Images of heroics, shame, primal urge and all the rest pulse through a young man's brain as he struggles with the big question: fight or flee.

Seemed un-interesting at times
The book at many parts is much to mundane and slow moving. Soon you lose interest in the thoughts of Pvt. Henry Fleming. Its an average book in my mind.
