Kurzbeschreibung
One of the signature novels of the American 1960s, Couples is a book that, when it debuted, scandalized the public with prose pictures of the way people live, and that today provides an engrossing epitaph to the short, happy life of the “post-Pill paradise.” It chronicles the interactions of ten young married couples in a seaside New England community who make a cult of sex and of themselves. The group of acquaintances form a magical circle, complete with ritualistic games, religious substitutions, a priest (Freddy Thorne), and a scapegoat (Piet Hanema). As with most American utopias, this one’s existence is brief and unsustainable, but the “imaginative quest” that inspires its creation is eternal.

The first time I started reading this book I could not get into it and put it away again. After seeing the movie "the icestorm" (free translation of the title it had in Germany) with Kevin Kline I was ready for another try. And this time I was held a hostage from the first page to the last. The cool way Updike describes the (sexual) games of the Tarbox couples is truely fascinating. It is clear that there is bound to be some kind of catastroph but in stead of something dramatic, everything just passes "matter-of-factly" and in that way has much more effect. A great book by a great author!

I have to admit, much like porn, I bought the book based on its cover. "Seductive" Savagely graphic" etc. These are the things that make me spend 13 bucks. However, what was considered lewd and graphic back in the '60's is downright quaint today. What we're left with, however, is another Updike masterpiece. No one knows the suburbs like Updike and he once again demonstrates his mastery over this terrain here. Despite the Biblical overtones of the ending (which seemed forced and completely out of the flow of this otherwise seemless novel) this is a book that you fall into like a comfy couch. It takes a while to keep the characters straight and the fact that each of them takes up with another's spouse only complicates matters further but once you become familiar with everyone the sparks almost crackle off the page. There's a reason this guy's so famous.

458 pages full of great language, convincing characters (one first has to get a grip of, I admit) and story lines, plus all types of emotional shades including wonderful cynism, so that this book doesn't get even close to boring at any point. Everyone can recognize and identify with both the described feelings, desillusions, hopes, dreams, and disappointments, long relationships and/or adulthood brings along, as well as with the insights into life of a little town. The end is just as clean and simple and perfect as the rest of the story. A true pleasure to read.

Great Book!
This book is great! 1 Long and difficult, but Updikes writing style is amazing and potrays lots of detailed sex between the protagonist Piet and all of his love affairs... Lesen Sie weiter...
