Cosmos was the first science TV blockbuster, and Carl Sagan was its (human) star. By the time of Sagan's death in 1996, the series had been seen by half a billion people; Sagan was perhaps the best-known scientist on the planet. Explaining how the series came about, Sagan recalled:

I was positive from my own experience that an enormous global interest exists in the exploration of the planets and in many kindred scientific topics--the origin of life, the Earth, and the Cosmos, the search for extraterrestrial intelligence, our connection with the universe. And I was certain that this interest could be excited through that most powerful communications medium, television.

Sagan's own interest and enthusiasm for the universe were so vivid and infectious, his screen presence so engaging, that viewers and readers couldn't help but be caught up in his vision. From stars in their "billions and billions" to the amino acids in the primordial ocean, Sagan communicated a feeling for science as a process of discovery. Inevitably, some of the science in Cosmos has been outdated in the years since 1980--but Sagan's sense of wonder is ageless. --Mary Ellen Curtin

I can confess it: I became an astronomer because of this book and the corresponding TV series, and I don't regret that. I asked this to be my birthday present when I was 10 or 11, it was 1600 pesetas (an expensive book at this time), and I read it several times. Since them I feel the emotion of these pages, and their strength. When I read this again, I cannot avoid to "float" by the great feeling. A must for anybody who wants to understand this world.

I bought this book when I was perhaps 10 years old - it was the first expensive thing I've bought from my own money, and it was one of the best purchases in my life. This is more than a simple book about facts; Sagan is able to give the reader an impression of the fascination not only of astronomy, but of the triumphs of science in general. The brilliance of the ancient greeks, who calculated the radius of the earth only by the angle of an obelisk's shadow in northern and in central egypt. Kepler's genius and the elegance of its second law.... In addition, it covers many aspects of astronomy in a very interesting way. Extremely inspiring!

This is one of the best books I have ever read. It explains the world we are living in, but it is not just a scientific book. It unites so many fields of knowledge that I assume, Sagan must be a genius. Philosophy, Physics, Maths, Relegion, all that is coming together in a masterpiece that you will be unable to put down, eager to know what is happening on the next page, what miacles the author will reveal to you...It is just so beautyful...If you want to have Cosmos in a story by the way, read Contact. Sagan's works will stay with us along with those of Hawking...Buy this and change the way you live and look at the world you're living in.
