Mr. Quark is a down-on-his luck pot-smuggler hiding out in the mountains of Colombia with his dog, High Pockets, and a small band of banditos led by the irascible Jose. Only months before, these three and their fearless associates were rolling in millions in cash and high-grade marijuana, eluding prosecution on “ridiculously false” drug and terrorism charges. But times have quickly grown lean, and to liven up their exile, Jose decides to mug a family of American tourists.
Among the spoils are physics texts, which launch Mr. Quark on a side-splitting, boisterous adventure north to California, where he confronts the owner of the books with his own theories on relativity, the nature of the universe, and looking for the meaning of life in all the wrong places….
Über den Autor
Allan Weisbecker is a novelist, screenwriter, award-winning photojournalist, and life-long surfer. He caught his first wave off Long Island, NY, in 1966, when he was 17 years old. Roaming the world in pursuit of waves during the heyday of the counterculture led to a career as a marijuana smuggler. He retired from that trade in 1980 and wrote Cosmic Banditos (Vintage), a gonzo rendering of his pot-pirate experiences.
From 1980 to 1995, Weisbecker was a screen writer for film and television programs including Miami Vice. During the 1990, he developed his career as a journalist and photographer, and his work now frequently appears in Smithsonian, Men’s Journal, Popular Photography, American Photo, Sailing, and all the major surfing publications. Weisbecker lives on Long Island.

Die deutsche Ausgabe des Buches wurde 1988 im Goldmann Verlag veröffentlicht. Mit einer kleinen Auflage und einer noch kleineren Leserschaft verschwandt es umgehend vom deutschen Markt. Dennoch stellt "Cosmic Banditos" eine brilliante Mixtur aus Drogenschmuggel, Quantenmechanik und Lebensverwirklichung dar. Man könnte meinen, William S. Burroughs, Hunter S. Thompson und John Fante wären in einem Swingerclub zusammengetroffen, um in einem wahnwitzigen Kopulationsakt dieses Meisterwerk zu schaffen.

I am not much into Physics but there is no need to be to follow this book. Sure - the protagonist tells a lot about Quantum Mechanics and stuff but he does it on a level everyone should be able to understand.
He starts reading these books in some kind of ennui-emergency, caught in the middle of nowhere in South America, doomed to wait until all the governments in the Western Hemisphere will have forgotten about his evil deeds - which are mainly based on drugs: Drug dealing, drug usage and all the stuff that comes along with this lifestyle. He meets some REALLY insane people on his way (i.e. the Comical Team from hell), befriended a boa constrictor and tries to come to terms with his existence. The dry humour and crazy situations made me giggle and laugh out loud throughout the whole book - strongly recommended!!

This book is currently my Favorite Book of All Time. It has everything--Tequila, Doggy Sneese Attacks, Nymphomaniacs and Albert Einstein (just to mention a few). It's laugh-out-loud funny, but is also deep and personally reflective at times. I think anyone who reads this book will have their Worldview shaken up. If you know someone who takes themself a little too seriously, this book could be therapy for them. It makes me wonder what my life would've been like if I had never bought this book. Maybe somewhere in another dinension I am wandering around without "Cosmic Banditos." That would be a shame.
I definitely recommend getting your hands on this book...... Good luck banditos.

When a friend of mine approached me with an old book of his a few years ago named "Cosmic Banditos" all I could do was laugh. However, the last laugh was difinitely on me. Never had I read such a hilarious, nonsensical, and metaphysical book. If only more people had heard of "cosmic Banditos," I truly think it would have become a genuine cult classic. If you haven't read this tale of drugs, corruption, fate, and Mexican spoofs, now is the time to BUY

On a non-related Amazon search I stumbled across this book. I was compelled to read it due to the excellent reviews it had received. And after reading it, I am glad to report that Cosmic Banditos is one of the coolest books I have ever read. I am not one to normally laugh out loud when reading, but this book was the exception. I couldn't keep the chuckles in! The author manages to meld two completely non-related subjects of drug running and quantum mechanics into a seamless and captivating tale. This book is a must buy for people who enjoy out of the norm books, or those who just want a change from the more serious titles usually found on best seller lists. Heck this book should be a must buy for ANYBODY who likes to laugh, period!
