Synopsis
"My dad used to say to me, 'Try to keep a cool head and a warm heart'. At least I think it was my dad. I don't really remember him." Gravy worked in the graveyard - hence the name. He was having a normal day until his friend Benjy turned up in a car Gravy didn't recognise. Benjy had a bullet hole in his chest, but lived just long enough to ask Gravy to hide him and look after his gun. Gravy had looked after things for Benjy before, but never a gun. When Gravy looked in the car he found blood, a balaclava and a bag stuffed with money. Gravy's not too bright but he wants to help his friend. So Gravy finds himself caught up in the middle of a robbery gone wrong, a woman who witnessed a murder, and some very unpleasant men who will do anything to get back the money Benjy stole...

a brilliant short story of the early rankin.and as always the picture he draws of crooks, gangsters and the other characters involved are forever so real as if they would stand right in front of you. the story is way too short indeed a quick read but bears everything a good story must have. I especially appreciated the fact that it is really basic - no waste on decoration, only the most neccessary players - and it goes fast, takes you away with it. an excellent read.

Spannend und kurzweilig zu lesen, dabei wie bei Rankin gewohnt anspruchsvoll. Schade, dass er nicht länger ist.

Ian Rankin for the literacy challenged

Purchased this book as an Ian Rankin fan without reading that it had been written specifically for a project involving people with literacy problems. Compared to the normal Rankin flashes of his style and evocation of Edinburgh but translated into a short format and simple language. An admirable attempt to get those who would not normally read to access the book but ultimately unsatisying for the more advanced reader.

A Cool Head is a worthwhile read if you're going through the Quick Read series of short story books. It does end before wrapping up all the important parts of the plot. There's a lot of characters, and maybe if there was a word count to fit under the Quick Read parameters, it may have been better to leave one or two out and concentrate on wrapping up the story. It does wrap up most points though and is worthwhile reading.
The basic plot of A Cool Head, revolves around a bag of money which is stolen in a deadly gun battle while being handed over to a corrupt politician by UK gangsters. Benjy, the nephew of a long time gangster enforcer, has gotten greedy and decided to take the bribe money for himself. Only problem is that he got shot in the chest while getting away. Benjy often used a mentally challenged graveyard gardener to hide things for him so naturally visits the graveyard. Gravy the Forrest Gump type character gardener, doesn't know what to do when Benjy kneels on the ground and doesn't get up again. Gravy decides to take Benji's car to an address he finds in the glovebox, where he stumbles across a women unhappily being forced to testify against a murderer in witness protection. She sees the money and decides this her ticket to freedom.
I would have liked to have seen more Gravy scenes than there are. Having not read any other Rankin books, I'm not sure if Gravy or any of the other characters are from other Rankin novels, if they are those familiar with them may get something more out of this short story than I did.
A Cool Head is part of the Quick Reads series of books to increase literacy levels by encouraging those who don't like to read beyond magazines and comic books to try fiction through cheap priced short story length fiction and non fiction.
