Amazon.de

When Marta Sgubin joined Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis's household in 1969, she thought her job as companion to John Jr. and Caroline Kennedy temporary. Twenty-five years later, she was still with the family, as cook, household manager, and friend to "Madam," who urged Sgubin to compile her repertoire of simple but elegant dishes. Sgubin's Cooking for Madam: Recipes and Reminiscences from the Home of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis presents nearly 100 of the family's favorite recipes plus dozens of never-published snapshots, most in color, of Mrs. Onassis, her family, and friends. Readers interested in an intimate glimpse of the Kennedy-Onassis household, as well as those seeking delicious, reliable dishes for everyday meals and for entertaining, will welcome Sgubin's book.

The recipes, arranged by seasonal menus and preceded by Sgubin's recollections, run the gamut from Oeufs Toupinal, a simple egg, ham, and potato dish that was served to Hillary Rodham Clinton on a tray, to the dressier Veal Stuffed with Morel Mousse, a dish Mrs. Onassis preferred without the sweetbreads it originally called for. Included also are a hearty shepherd's pie, a favorite of Diana Vreeland; Caroline's much-loved Chocolate Roll; and Floating Island, a John Jr. pick. The company dishes are outweighed by the informal fare, and most cooks will have no trouble preparing either. Sgubin's book succeeds as both cookbook and insider's tribute, showing us a remarkable personality through the food she enjoyed and the people she loved. --Arthur Boehm

This is a delightful book, full of warm reminiscences and wonderful recipes. I recently made Marta's delicious scrambled eggs, and now my husband doesn't want them prepared any other way. I am anxious for summertime, when I will try some of Marta's fresh vegetable salads and her summer pudding.
The photos in this book show the private side of the Kennedys, which evoked bittersweet feelings in me. I remember Camelot and the tragedies that followed; paging through the photos in Marta's book brought back some of the warm, familial feelings the Kennedys engendered. Since the recent death of JFK Jr., the memories chronicled in this book are especially touching.
Marta, you have written a charming tribute to the Kennedy family, whose members you obviously love and respect. Bravo!

I came home from a very trying day at work and found this book had arrived. I began reading it immediately and found it so interesting.
You must read the text between the recipes to get the full impact. What a story. One can't imagine the life and times of these people, but Marta gives you a good idea.
The recipes aren't that difficult and I'll be trying some soon. They are very healthy sounding.
What is sad is to see all of the family pictures and to realize that so many of them are gone.
They had a magical life with "Madam". Grand Jackie fits her best.

The recipes are simple, elegant, and easy to execute. The book is made up of ordinary recipes executed with a special know-how (example...the scrambled eggs, the dill flavored pita-bred, the berry pudding, the baked potatos stuffed with poached eggs, etc.) that make this a very good cookbook. The author's memories and personal photos make it a moving memoir. I was impressed.

This book is a delight for the loyal Jackie-ite, as well as for those that don't follow her. Marta Sgubin, long-time housekeeper at 1040 (Mrs. Onassis' Fifth Avenue address) writes a warm book full of antecdotes, recipes and great snapshots. Pictures of Jackie on Christmas morning or of John Jr strumming his guitar or Caroline blowing out candles on her birthday cake, make you feel like you were there. What is especially intriguing is that this book was sanctioned by Mrs. Onassis' two children, with John even writing the foreward. Obviously they want this more personal side of their very private mother to be known by the general public. Now, if only Nancy Tuckerman would write her memoirs (are you listening Tucky?), the ordinary side of an ordinary woman who happened to have lived an extraordinary life will be almost complete.

I actually made the "Diana Vreeland Shepherd's Pie" and my dinner guests thought it was scrumptious and asked for the recipe!
This is a charming book, a refreshing tale of the Kennedy family told from the kitchen, of all places. The pictures are wonderful, simple, informal poses of the family when they wanted to have their pictures taken, and not when the press intruded on their lives. The author is discrete and protective, but funny and warm as well.
For anyone who loves the Kennedys and for anyone who loves good food, this is the book for you.

Marta Sgubin's book is a loving valentine to "Madam", the late Mrs. Onassis. Not only does one enjoy the dishes which she so lovingly cares for. But we see the very real and personal side to Jacqueline Onassis, she was a real person with ordinary tastes and habits. Ms. Sgubin has created a very warm and perhaps, the best book on Jackie. We see her and her family as they saw themselves, as a family. She writes, not only as a gifted cook, but as a member of the family, with compassion and love. Well done! Erick Fortmann

This book, I feel, is like getting a peek into the Kennedy family photo album/scrapbook. It's filled with so many wonderful anecdotes of Jackie's family life you won't find in any of the latest "Jackie" books on the market. PLUS you'll get a fabulous brownie recipe. I brought these treats into work and people were fighting over them! And they're easy to make, too (did Jackie really eat these fattening brownies? Maybe a nibble or two, I suppose). You won't be sorry you bought this book.

The author has compiled recipes suited to particular occasions--summer gatherings, small dinner parties, birthdays, etc.--and documented their preparation thoroughly. Interspersed throughout the book are the type of family photos that we all have of our own families gathering for birthdays, holiday dinners, and the like. In addition to being a marvelous collection of elegant (but simple to prepare) recipes, it is also a respectful look at one of this country's more interesting families.
