Vy Aleknos is the leader of a hawk shifter flock. Openly gay since he was a teen, Vy is proud and self-assured on the outside, while secretly worrying he’ll be forced to spend his life alone because two males can’t be mates. When bear shifter Robert Cimino appears in Vy’s small town, Vy realizes his concerns were unfounded — he has a male mate, and a sexy, dominant one to boot.

Robert is a bear shifter who refuses to shift. Immediately attracted to Vy, he deviates from his normal pattern and seeks more than a one off with the powerful, bristly hawk. But Robert’s affections are rooted in his human form, and when Vy discovers Robert doesn't recognize him as his mate, he pulls away. If Robert wants to stay with Vy, he must convince a man deeply ruled by his animal instincts to give their relationship as humans a chance.

I really like both authors' stories but this one is only disappointing. Why two fantastic authors combined are horrible, I don't know, but the result of this experiment is sad...
Neither the caracters are really sympathetic nor is the storyline convincing. It's like waiting for something that never comes: no lovely characters, no funny dialogues, no suspense. Nothing of the typical points the reader usually can expect from these authors.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Beautiful and Heartwarming Shifter-Light Reading 20. April 2014
Von Kazza - On Top Down Under Book Reviews - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition
Vy Aleknos lives in the small town of Elk River, Colorado. He is twenty eight and has a construction company. He is also a hawk shifter, the kaur of the Elk River ket. The kaur is the ‘alpha/leader’ and the ket is the hawk equivalent of the ‘pack/clan.’ He’s gay, some of the ket and some of his family don’t like it, most are good with it. His immediate family have no issues and his father, who was the kaur prior to Vy, makes it very clear that no one is to be intolerant, he won’t stand for it.

One day in town, Vy smells his mate - very much hoping his mate isn’t female. Fate can be fickle, but he will accept what it has in store for him because, even though he is a contemporary man, he believes very strongly in his roots and the ket.

Robert Cimino works with nature, he lives in nature, and he wanders around. A lot. More specifically, he is a vegan bear shifter who meditates, does yoga and is quite zen-like. Oh yes, he also doesn’t shift. Ever. Robert feels he is a man first and foremost, not a bear. This comes to light after Vy and Robert have sex. For the first time Vy lets go and submits to another man, and it’s beautiful. But that feeling doesn’t last long. When Vy flies out to surprise Robert where he is working, Robert doesn’t recognise Vy in his bird form, thinks he is just another hawk. Mates always recognise one another. He now learns that Robert keeps his animal half under wraps so his mate bond is not activated. He can’t know Vy is his mate. Vy believes he can only ever be just another man, another conquest to Robert. Vy feels Robert coursing in his veins but Robert won’t be able to feel that. Sure, Robert’s scent changed after they were intimate, but only Vy will know it and feel it. Not Robert. This totally devastates Vy.

If you like Cardeno C and Mary Calmes, but you aren't so fussed about shifter books, I say don't worry and jump on in because this really is a contemporary romance more than a full-blown shifter read.

It takes good writing to pull a reader back from thinking, ‘will I or won’t I continue reading this,’ to then giving said reader no choice other than to give the book 5 stars. Cardeno C and Mary Calmes did just that with me. I struggled initially with Vy often saying, ‘I’m the kaur of the ket,’ with the ket’s quick-to-jump-to-conclusions attitude about Robert. However, all my reservations with Vy flew out the window as he redeemed himself and I understood his position and him. 'Robert the Bear' was charming. So I ended up thoroughly engrossed in the MC’s and their story. It is a story full of love and emotion and strong characterisations. The sex is earth-movingly high on the sexual Richter Scale. Even if you are not a huge shifter lover there is a lot to like about Control as a contemporary MM romance. If you do like a paranormal with an emphasis on shifters and romance, some engaging MC’s, and a few interesting secondary characters, then I recommend Control very highly to you. Control is beautifully named, the cover is beautifully crafted and it all suits the writing to a tee. 5 Stars.

"Please let me show you what it's like to be cherished, Vy. I promise you won't regret it."

5.0 von 5 Sternen Love! Love! Love! 20. April 2014

Okay, so there was never a doubt in my mind that I would love this book. Not even one. I'm a rabid fan of both authors, and when I heard they wrote a story together my little fangirl heart nearly exploded. I loved Vy. He is all alpha but not how you'd expect, his vulnerability and surrender triggered all sorts of yummy scenes. Robert... OMG, the grabby hands, but he's more than a toppy bear. I'm not gonna break the story down into who did what, when and how. I'm sure some talented reviewer will mosey along and take care of that sooner than later. I just wanted to put it out there that I thought it was insane amazing, and that it's going on my comfort food shelf and will be re-read many, many, many more times. Highly Recommended!!!

4.0 von 5 Sternen Pack dynamics and interesting shifters made this an enjoyable romance with some great action sequences. 20. April 2014
Von Kindle Romance - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition
Vy is arrogant on the outside, but lonely on the inside. A hawk shifter, Vy is excited to finally find his mate in Robert, even though Robert is a bear. Unfortunately, Robert isn't interested in shifting, and, therefore, doesn't recognize Vy as his mate. Vy struggled with wanting to be with Robert while at the same time feeling very frustrated that Robert wouldn't recognize him as his true mate. Instead, Robert is just interested in Vy as a person. This leads to the biggest conflict between these two mates, and gives the story an interesting twist on the instant love we usually see with mates. Fortunately, Robert was an amazing and patient person who was willing to try to work through this issue with Vy. Robert was always going out of his way to help improve the world around him and take care of Vy. Vy matured quite a bit during the story with the help of Robert and Vy's father. This allowed him to truly step up to being the pack leader. By the end, it was obvious Robert and Vy were meant for each other.

I enjoyed the focus on the different issues with the pack members, and the trouble that they were having with another pack. This aspect of the story gave Robert, an outsider, a chance to prove he was trustworthy to the pack.

The one little thing that bothered me was the constant interruptions between the characters as they were talking to each other. It's a pet peeve of mine when people interrupt each other in real life, so seeing it happen in the story distracted me.

As a huge fan of shifter stories, I was excited to see two of my favorite authors write this story together.

3.0 von 5 Sternen M/M Shifter Story With A Few Flaws 3. Mai 2014
Von Daniel F. Bowen - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
Contol is a joint effort by two authors: Mary Calmes and Cardeno C. I've read both of their works and enjoyed them. Control is the story of a bear shifter Robert and his meeting Vy, a hawk shifter. The focus is on them and how their relationship advances and retreats as they become friends as well as mates.

I read a lot of shifter stories and one topic that comes up from time to time is 'instant mating' -- The sniff, mine, and mate 'romance' which really isn't romantic at all. CONTROL has an interesting take on shifter mates. Both men don't know what to expect in the mating process and come at it differently. Robert, the bear, wants to know Vy as a person, as a friend, and go from there. Vy is more aware of his other half and has conflicting feelings when Robert doesn't acknowledge the mate drive. Since Robert doesn't shift into his bear, of course he won't know Vy is his mate. So it's an interesting concept and very well done. Kudos.

There were a few things that distracted from my enjoyment. It seemed like each chapter was written in a different point of view from the last. Vy and Robert kept interchanging so one would be speaking, the other next, and back and forth and so on. At times I got caught up in which arm was around who's shoulder and the use of 'he' and 'his' was used so many times I got confused as to which person was now talking. I am a fast reader and I slightly remember it was Robert's POV right now, but I can't be completely sure, and my kindle is difficult to page back and double check. . . Because then I'd lose my place. If I was to backtrack, I'd have to go back and figure out which chapter I'm in and then page forward, which I have done in the past, but not for this book. So I ended up half the time not knowing who was talking and who was being talked about. It was distracting and frustrating.

I enjoyed hearing about Vy's flock and his interactions with them. Even better was seeing their leader in a job, any job. I can't tell you how many stories I've read where the alpha/leader doesn't have any means of support and lets his pack support him. Not in this. Vy is a construction worker, getting down and dirty - Think hard hat, sweat, and dust.

I would have liked a bit more bear / hawk play time. It was alluded to but never pursued. At least not in details. I mean finally Robert overcomes his bear and it's a big part of this story. So it'd be nice to see the continuing result - Robert and his bear and interacting with his 'just recognized' mate in their animal forms.

The angst from Robert's adoptive parents was a bit too over the top. At this time Robert and Vy are friends and mates. They've experienced a lot for a newly bonded pair. You would think they'd talk over everything and not let in-laws get in the way. Vy was a bit too bird brained about that whole thing. It was really silly.

I never did grasp if Vy's second in command, Louisa, was mated or just married to her husband. The wording in the opening chapter made me think she's just shacked up with someone until her own mate arrives. I also had that feeling with the way she treated her husband, not as she would treat a beloved mate. *shrug*

I never got a feeling on how large Vy's Ket is. Sure there are tons of cars at a meeting and the house and yard are packed, but I wondered. I seldom read about bird shifters. I was curious.

If this is the first in a series, I'd definitely check the next one. But as this one, CONTROL stands, it needs better flow. That is surprising because so much of this story is between the two main characters, Robert and Vy. The back and forth should flow on it's own. - Dan's Wife

3.0 von 5 Sternen A gentle bear and his fierce little bird - not a bad combination. 23. April 2014
Von B ME - Veröffentlicht auf

Robert is a Bear shifter that doesn't shift due to horrific trauma when he was small. He lost his parents and was raised by hippies who are experts on Bears. Vy is the Kuar of his ket at a relatively young age, and his lack of maturity shows in his dearth of empathy and insight with his people. He is the leader and he is strong but he also has a lot of growing up to do.
Vy identifies his mate by smell, he wasn't expecting a male or a Bear as a mate. Robert is everything he wants, and Vy is what Robert wants to have for...a session in an alley. Awkward! But maybe Robert wants Vy for a bit longer, however because he doesn't shift Robert doesn't recognise the mate in Vy. And because he was brought up by humans he also doesn't recognise Fate choosing mates, because how stupid is that? Needless to say it is so not smooth sailing, and there is the occasional mishap or twenty, but they forge a relationship that isn't a full mating. It takes danger and the full mating instinct to rear up in the form of a seven foot bear before they can progress further.
The characters are interesting although Vy appears very young in his behaviour with Robert and as the Kuar of the Ket it seems he should be much more mature. What kind of leader or man goes off in a sulk at the least provocation? What great leader jumps to conclusions and freezes people out rather than to discuss rationally - I found that very frustrating.
I have to say I was intrigued that these two authors have paired up and was excited to see what they came up with. I am not fully enamoured with the book, it was easy to put down which I haven't found with Mary Calmes books before, and I have enjoyed Cardeno C's books in the same manner. I don't know about this book - my test is do I want to read it again? Mary Calmes' book Frog, for instance, is one I constantly re-read, same with Again - this one hasn't grabbed me by the throat and given me a shake. For all that it is enjoyable - just not compelling.
