5.0 von 5 Sternen Practical Help 23. Juli 2000
Format:Taschenbuch
I read this book several times several years ago. I found the information included to be insightful and practical. I loaned it to a friend in crisis and it was so helpful to him, he asked to keep it. I have another friend in crisis and think this book will be of help to him, so I am ordering two more; one for him and one for me too keep and read again.

5.0 von 5 Sternen An antidote for traditional psychotherapies 21. August 2000
Von DR. MARTIN E LERNER - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
As a clinician and director of a residential program for people with eating disorders and chemical dependencies, Constructive Living provides a challenge to patients (students) and clinicians (teachers) alike. CL is about common sense and taking responsibility for solving both the day to day and long term problems of living. It offers a gateway to those seeking the truth about changing their lives. Those who read this book with an open mind will be challanged to revisit their current notions about Western psychotherapy and, more importantly, prompted to "live" in the solutions rather than continue to rethink and overanalyize the problems. It has become required reading for all my patients and remains for more than a decade, one of three books I keep on my nightstand for constant reference.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Short, simple, effective 19. Februar 2002
Von calmly - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch|Verifizierter Kauf
I was lost. It seemed to me that Western psychological theories were largely speculation and confident assertion and not much help. Krishnamurti made some great sense but I'd been unable after years to put his teaching into practice. What a welcome relief to find David Reynolds and "Constructive Living".
The emphasis on doing what one can do may seem simple. However, I had become so complicated and Reynolds' teaching set me straight and has kept me that way for 14 years now. This book and another early book by Reynolds, "The Quiet Therapies", provide tools that don't depend on any guru, including Reynolds. Unlike other teachers, Reynolds teaches! and then gets out of your way.
Reynolds' teaching draws from Japanese sources that were influenced by Buddhism. There's no need to become a Buddhist, but it was a good start for me in learning about Buddhism. Reynolds big contribution has been helping me learn to stay grounded. A day doesn't go by that I don't apply what I learned from "Constructive Living". Reynolds is prolific but this one of his many books on Constructive Living has been my favorite.
Reynolds is an excellent speaker as well. The 3 audiotapes available for "Constructive Living" are a fresh presentation on the subject with many new anecdotes and not a reading of this book. The book and tapes have complemented each other well for me.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A Small Book That May Change Your Life 4. Juli 2009
Von Enamorato - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch|Verifizierter Kauf
From the outset, David K. Reynolds gives it to you straight: "This is a book about outgrowing your problems. Let me be clear at the outset that I cannot make your problems go away. No one can. Life brings to all of us problems as well as successes, despair as well as joy... Life cannot be an uninterrupted high. So if there are bound to be occasional lows, it seems sensible to have a strategy for taking them in stride."

The book delivers just that: Constructive Living is an action-oriented strategy of engagement with life in all its complexity. This book was a much-needed dose of reality for me. It is concise; almost brusquely so. Reynolds does not waste a single word. This may in part be due to the focus of Constructive Living itself on action as opposed to the endless reflection that characterizes most Western psychotherapies. This is an energizing, affirming way to live.

In little more than a hundred pages, Reynolds outlines a complete system for maximizing your potential in life, while remaining compassionate and open to those around you and flexible to the inevitable rough patches. Reynolds outlines his common sense approach to problems such as shyness, depression, chronic fatigue and fear and anxiety. At first (like myself), you may find his approach to these problems overly facile and too simplistic. However, with time and application (and possibly, like me, trying out a few other methods and finding them ultimately dead-ends), you realize just how right Reynolds was all along and appreciate the elegant simplicity.

I have read several of Reynolds' books, and this one is by far my favorite. Reynolds has said that the definitive book on Constructive Living has not yet been written, but I would be hard-pressed to improve upon the succinctness and effectiveness of this little green volume. Even the more elaborate "Handbook for Constructive Living" does not present the principles in as short and sweet a form. This book could replaced dozens of longer, more elaborate self-help books cluttering the shelves of bookstores.

Also recommended is Patricia Ryan Madson's Improv Wisdom: Don't Prepare, Just Show Up. Madson trained under Reynolds to become a certified Constructive Living instructor. Her book incorporates the principles of Constructive Living with techniques from improvisational theatre. While not a replacement for Reynold's book, it is an excellent supplement with wonderful insights into living a fully present, engaged life life.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Brilliant Wisdom for Effective Living 15. April 2008
Von Brian Johnson - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch|Verifizierter Kauf
"There are no neurotics or geniuses or failures or fools. There are only neurotic moments, flashes of brilliance, failed opportunities, and stupid mistakes. But these moments, pleasant or unpleasant, can never fix us into rigid, immutable characters. We cannot help but change. This book is about choosing the direction of your changingness and acting upon your choice." ~ David K. Reynolds from "Constructive Living"

"Constructive Living." It's a book a friend and favorite author of mine, Dan Millman ("The Way of the Peaceful Warrior," "Everyday Enlightenment," etc.), recommended to me. I've always admired Dan and his work for his ability to blend East and West with an ultimate focus on ACTION. And, now I know why he recommended this book to me: it's an incredible manual on how to master ourselves and learn to take consistent, impeccable action.

"Constructive Living" is based on the fundamental notion that, although we can't control our feelings, we CAN control our behaviors. And, as a result, craft our ideal life. Or, as Reynolds says so poetically: "Our behavior is controllable in a way that our feelings are not. There is a very special satisfaction for the Artist of Living who works within life's limits to produce a fine self-portrait. The more control we develop over our actions, the more chance we have of producing a self we can be proud of."

That, in a nutshell, is what Constructive Living is all about. :)

I have no doubt you'll enjoy this book. It's a quick read--only 120 pages--and I highly recommend you jump in now!
