Pressestimmen

'Bursting with anecdotes from a 36-year career that spans hitmen and heart attacks, via Paul Simon, Norman Mailer, a llama and a coyote.' INDEPENDENT

Kurzbeschreibung

Driving a cab for more than 30 years Gene Salomon has collected a remarkable selection of stories. He shares the very best in this unforgettable memoir.

Eugene has had everyone in the back of his cab: Lauren Bacall, Leonardo di Caprio, John McEnroe, Sean Penn and Dennis Hopper, Simon and Garfunkel, Robin Williams, Norman Mailer, Diane Keaton and, yes, even Kevin Bacon.

He’s taken all sorts of people for a ride: Mafiosi, hookers, the rich and famous, down and outs, young lovers, tourists from every corner of the globe, lifetime New Yorkers, passengers in a rush, and others with no particular place to go.

So sit back and enjoy the ride, but remember . . . the meter’s running.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A treat to read! 16. März 2013

If Mario Andretti and Studs Terkel had a baby, he would be Eugene Salomon. Perched like a parrot on Mr. Salomon's shoulder, we enter the world of the short-term personal chauffeur. Mr. Salomon's job provides him a lively livelihood. The city is a teeming conglomerate of characters as he flawlessly drives and focuses on his passengers. For years he has been observing human beings in our vast variety - and he has been taking notes! Tell him where you want to go and he'll get you there and, if you choose, he'll chat along the way. He's genuinely interested in who you are and where you've been. Your time together gives him the chance to gain an insight into how you live and what you think about life in general or something specific. You choose a topic or he will. If you prefer Silence, that's fine too, but it's a missed opportunity to charm and be charmed by this savvy, delightful designated driver.

Mr. Salomon's heart beats to the pulse of his true love, Manhattan. He flows through the city like blood through an artery. He knows who lives here and who comes and goes. What matters is that we're all fellow travelers, going somewhere, being somewhere here and now, with the chance to connect and enjoy the ride on our way. Adventures and insights abound. Here is a guy who pays attention, with stories to glean and stories to tell. No one celebrates people like Mr. Salomon. And no one suffers fools less gladly. Fame and fortune do not buy you his respect but he'll give it freely if it's warranted. Tolerant, patient, curious and cheerful, Mr. Salomon has his limits and it's "OUT!!! ... GET OUT OF MY CAB!!!" if you cross the line. Oh! The places he goes and the people he meets!

Diogenes, the guy you've been looking for has his eyes and ears wide open and he's behind the wheel of a bright yellow taxi in New York City.

What a fun read!
2.0 von 5 Sternen less than i hoped for 21. Juni 2014

i heard the author on a radio show, and he sounded interesting, and had a nice manner. the book ,however, is dull. just lots of page and a half little stories that dont at all tie together, there is no overall narrative, or " vibe". each story is a page and a half chapter, and i keep reading a chapter at a time, hoping the next one has real interest. most times, it doesnt. its was only a couple of bucks, certainly not the worst money i ever spent, but i was hopeful for much more.

This book was great fun to read! The author tells his stories about the passengers he met with wit and humor and amazing insight into the human condition. I wish the book could have gone on and on. I'd loved to have been a customers of his on one of my treks to New York.

As a fan of any memoirs about New York City, I loved this book and couldn't put it down. Mr. Salomon is a great writer... witty, poignant, serious, honest. If you have ever taken a cab ride in NYC, you will certainly be able to relate, but just note that he does not "sugarcoat" anything, vocabulary included! Highly recommended!

This is not only a book about the observations of a taxi driver it's also a commentary on the wonderful assortment of people that make up the population of NYC.
As a NY city native I think Eugene's insights of and about the people and the city ring very true.
Read the book in 3 sittings - nice smooth read.
If I ever get in your cab expect a higher than average tip for giving us a nice slice of NYC.
