When it comes to classic, ancient literature, few beat Poe, the man credited with creating science fiction (though his was more of a speculative fiction) and the modern detective story (with Murders in the Rue Morgue). Two creations to be proud of. And while authors like Hemmingway and Fitzgerald are often called dated, in a hundred years Poe will still be Poe. They're still effective as anything written today. Although they might not horrify the modern horror readers. Not that Poe was all about horrifying you anyways. I think people get the wrong idea of Poe. Thinking his writings to be all gory and morbid. Reading his work (especially his poems)he seems to be filled with more sadness than madness. And sometimes hope shines through his hoplessness. He's actually a pretty diverse artist of words.
There are various collections of Poe, and this one is good as any (and as a plus, it has a jazzy cover). There are various stories and poems that are alone worth the price.
