Quilter's music is extraordinary in its metrical ingenuity, especially the solo piano music, which is particularly personal in its expression. Convention requires him to choose just one time-signature at a time, but the story is usually much more complex than that. This rhythmic virtuosity stems from his love of language, just as it did in Mendelssohn. David Owen Norris
