Excellent, except too many typos 6. November 2010
Von R. Keefe - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
This is the second book on iOS programming I've used, and I got it specifically to move on to the iPad. Overall, I'm very pleased with the book. Compared to the first book, it streamlines a number of processes. However, even though the title lists iPad before iPhone, it only devotes one out of 23 chapters to the iPad. Also, for a book with the title "Complete Idiot", there are way too many typos that cause the programs to not compile cleanly. Luckily I have 30 years of programming and debugging, and can quickly figure out what's wrong, but if I actually were a novice, it would become frustrating. That's why I only gave it four stars -- too many typo's, and only one chapter on iPad programming.

Pros
====
- Well written, full of tips and gotcha alerts, keeps to the point.
- Covers quite a bit of ground, including becoming a paid Apple developer.
- Uses real programs, doesn't start with "Hello World".
- Doesn't hold your hand, shows you how to do something once, and from then
on, just tells you what to do, not how to do it (but does refer you back to
where to look if you don't remember how). Really helped me to remember,
instead of relying on the book as a crutch.

Cons
====
- Only one chapter dedicated to iPad programming.
- Looks rushed, too many small typo's in the code that cause compile issues.
- Doesn't hold your hand. This was a PRO for me, but not what I would expect
for a "Complete Idiot's Guide". Ironically, the other iPhone book I'm
using, which isn't marketed as for Idiot's or Dummies, does give you the
complete steps throughout the book, even in the later chapters. However, I
found that I wasn't learning the basics this way, since I didn't have to
remember them.

Published my first App using this book 26. April 2011
Von Daniel A. Kosek - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
I really like the book. I have some "C" and Delphi (Object Pascal) knowledge from 20-15 years ago, but I was never more than a hobbyist programmer. I agree the book has typos and I have kept an errata list to send to Troy. Just work each chapter in order and resist the urge to jump around until you get to at least chapter 10.

Even with those, I published my first App by the time I reached chapter 11. I'm in the process of developing five others, three of which are way beyond my knowledge, but having worked my way through more of the book, I'm not afraid to try.

Worst case you can read the book and when you get stuck, at least you can write somewhat understandable questions to the coders that frequent stackoverflow ... :) And visit the links to Stanford cs193 that are in the book.

IMHO, if you haven't read the book, you should review it based on what others said.

Jump on in, the water's fine ...

I love progressing from simple to more complex tutorials in each chapter. It feels like I'm working on actual assignments.
