5.0 von 5 Sternen Great resource for learning Tableau and Data Visualization and Communication 4. August 2014
Von Anya - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch|Verifizierter Kauf
"Communicating Data with Tableau" is a truly unique resource for getting started with the field of Data Visualization and using Tableau. In only a few short chapters you are up and running with an understanding of visualization best practices as well as practical step by step instructions to how to use Tableau software to create them quickly and easily.

While most "how to" books focus on just walking through features, this one explores data communication concepts, such as the conveying "How Much and How Many", "Proportions and Percentages", and "Changes Over Time". You are led through real world examples using the accompanying downloadable data sets. The examples are engaging, using data from various topics such as baseball, hurricanes and internet usage data. In addition to the extremly easy to follow instructions, the reasons behind why the visualizations were created using specific chart types and tool features is discussed. This approach makes each lesson entertaining and informative, and helps you maximize your understanding of how to communicate with data effectively.

The later chapters focus on creating impactful, informative, and interactive dashboards using advanced techniques and formatting. The easy to follow instructions will arm you with the ability to tell amazing data stories in just a few clicks.

4.0 von 5 Sternen A Book for Practitioners 4. Juli 2014
Von Eric Chou - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
This is a book for people who wants to get their hands dirty, play with data, and visualize the data quickly and easily. Just as the software brand itself as an easy way to visualize data for the normal folks, this book can be used with noob to data visualization such as myself.

It is absolutely great that Tableau has a public version of the tool and allows you to try a almost fully feature version for free. Therefore you don't need to worry about spending money before you actually find the software useful.

The author also provides clean dataset for you to play with. If you want to play with actual data, there is certainly no shortage of public data available, such as https://data.seattle.gov, https://data.cityofnewyork.us/, and https://controllerdata.lacity.org/.

The book starts off with the basics and gradually move into the more advance topics. Therefore it is less of a reference book than a tutorial, in my opinion. The author does try hard to assume no prior knowledge of statistics and data visualization experience, which was great for me.

Bottom line, I find it a good investment of my time and effort. Now I have a new tool in my bag of tricks. :)

5.0 von 5 Sternen Expertly Written - Add to Collection Now! 2. Juli 2014
Von George Weatherwax Jr - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
Whether new to Tableau or a Jedi in training, Ben Jones has done an excellent job authoring what should be on any Tableau analyst's desk. The book isn't a comprehensive Tableau model nor does it claim to be. Instead, the book ties everything back to the fundamental process of communication- specifically using data with Tableau.

For new Tableau users, the instructions for learning concepts are clear with images that are easy to understand. The author also makes all content available to follow along while reading. Having Tableau concepts in the context of why/how they should be used offer a real boost to the learning curve.

For the experienced Tableau user, there are plenty of tips in here that will make it well worth your time. The author does a fantastic job explaining complicated charts like box plots, control charts, and waterfall charts. The book isn't a full manual of Tableau features nor does it claim to be.

Example data sets used in the book are wide ranging and enhance concepts being taught. Again, all data and Tableau work is available to work with which is a huge added bonus to the printed book. I've enjoyed looking through the Visualizations and plan to download data and replicate certain charts myself.

The chapters are presented at manageable lengths with a logical flow to them. Soon after beginning with basic relationships, readers will have the knowledge and tools to build multi-view dashboards in Tableau that truly communicate and don't just look pretty or have cool features. Author uses a style that is very approachable and easy to follow.

If you are new to Tableau or have been using it for some time now, this book is good for you. It is an easy read and hones in on the fundamentals of Data Analysis and Data Visualization in each chapter. Ben Jones has done an amazing job in writing this book and it lives up to Tableau's mission 'Help people to see and understand data" better.

Author has given ample tips and tricks with variety of data sets to follow along with the book. Right from the first chapter, readers will get an opportunity to start slow and gradually progressed into later chapters to cover some complex graphs.
4.0 von 5 Sternen This book is great for starters 23. Juni 2015
Von AJ - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch|Verifizierter Kauf
This book is great for starters, but a little bit on the simple side for people who already know the basics.

I wish it can have more advanced and visually pleasant dashboard building guide. If anyone knows any books or classes related with advanced Tableau dashboard building, please let me know.

Thanks!
