This graphic business novel brings the Real Options model in a unique and understandable format, by explaining theories in a way only Sequential Art can.

Via Rose Randall, the main character of this unique graphic business novel, the reader is introduced to the challenges a project manager faces. Rose Randall is the archetypical reluctant project manager. Following a painful project failure years ago, Rose's life is cast into chaos when she is once again thrown into the role against her wishes. Faced with a struggling project, help comes from an unexpected source guiding Rose in the direction of Real Options.

When you have read Commitment, you:
* understand what the Real Options model is;
* can apply the Real Options model to manage project risks successfully;
* understand why much of your life involves options that you currently are treating as commitments;
* see the world through a different filter opening up many new possibilities;
* understand the difference between Commitments and Options.

Because the book will:
* provide specific examples of how a project can manage its risks using the Real Options model;
* outline a simple technique for making decisions;
* make you aware of all the decisions you make every day;
* build your confidence in your ability to decide when to commit and when to leave options open.

In short, this book is indispensable for new and experienced project managers plus anyone else who is interested in knowing more about managing large projects.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Ein Buch über Projektmanagement als Comic? 6. Juni 2013
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe

5.0 von 5 Sternen Brilliant book, i love it 2. Juni 2013

This is the most easy to read and most entertaining book on a rather complicated topic i ever read. It's actually fun to read it, and it's still a good explanation of one of the most relevant topics of it management right now.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Real Options changes your life 14. Mai 2013
Von Elizabeth Keogh - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
Chris Matts first introduced Real Options to me some years ago, and it changed the way I make decisions in every aspect of what I do.

When every decision is preceded by a quick check to see if you can open options up quickly and cheaply, so many possibilities emerge that we would commonly miss. Human beings have an innate dislike of uncertainty, and this book counters it neatly by helping us find that last responsible moment for making decisions, then extending that moment, giving us the comfort of knowing *when* to make a decision rather than *what* to make it. When we retain our possibilities for longer, we have more of them, and this book shows the kind of impact that this way of thinking can have on our lives and those of our colleagues.

That Chris, Chris and Olav have delivered this material in such a readable, engaging form is just the icing on the cake. An amazing, life-changing work.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Software economics trumps software engineering 31. Juli 2013
Von Walker Royce - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
This is a great read. Real options, agility, lean thinking, liquidity, valuation, game theory and decision making in the face of uncertainty are tough topics to make interesting. The authors tell a story that helps illuminate some of the big discriminators in successfully managing creative teams of people and even some pointy-haired stakeholders.

Software project management needs an economic foundation for quantified planning, decision-making, and measuring that resolves uncertainty earlier and unifies constituencies on governing a shared set of expected target outcomes. Successfully delivering software in a predictable and profitable manner requires an agile leadership style that expects an emerging mixture of discovery, production, assessment, and refactoring.

This book exposes some of the elements of that leadership style in a memorable way. If you are considering the option of buying this book, here is my assessment:

Option A: Don't buy it. You will miss out on some very rare and counter-intuitive insight and you will only save $20.

Option B: Buy it. You will part with $20, but you will save weeks and months of learning these insights from other sources or your own experience.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Great read for all! 14. Mai 2013
Von Bas Willemsen - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
While I find most business books quite hard to get through (especially in the start), Commitment's style really drew me into the story and made me want to read more. Its remarkable how engaging Commmitment is with mixing the comic style with a business content! Great read and I would recommend it to everybody working in a project management environment!

5.0 von 5 Sternen Good subject in an innovative new comic book format 15. Dezember 2013
Von Bas Vodde - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe|Verifizierter Kauf
Commitment is a "business comic book" about real options on a software project. The book format is quite fascinating actually. Most of the book is a comic book, which is very rare for a book like this (not know of any other). But then there are some non-comic book sections, but they are woven into the story as blog posts from the characters in the comic book. At first I was a bit skeptical about the format, but I think it worked really well.

The story is about a software project in trouble. Rose is a project admin who suddenly gets promoted to a project manager and she'll need to save a the project. At first she tried it the traditional way and it only makes it worth. She then tries our real options (together with Kanban and a bunch of other techniques) and ... well, I won't give away the ending of the book. You can read that for yourself.

The book is written as a business novel in comic book format. About 90% of the pages are well drawn comics (black and white) and about 10% of the book is excerpts from blog and facebook posts. The story was well written and flowed well. The drawings were good. The story was a bit predictable and sometimes I think it could have used a bit more text for explaining concepts, but all and all, I liked it. It is an easy read, in a couple of hours you ought to be able to get through. I'd give it four stars on content, but five stars considering the wonderful and innovative format. Excellent.
