The first interview book from the What Color Is Your Parachute? career guru Richard Bolles.

Interviews instill fear in many a job-hunter, but this empowering guide from legendary career expert Richard N. Bolles reveals that interviews are really just conversations to determine if the work—and workplace—is a great fit for both parties.

For the first time, Bolles combines his decades of experience with the latest studies and job-market research to create an all-in-one guide for the whole interview process, from pre-interview research to elevator pitches, “tell me about yourself” questions, and salary negotiation. This slender handbook provides just the essentials: the three most important things you need to know about interviews, the five questions you must have answers for, and an ingenious summary of how to succeed. With this guide in hand, you’ll walk into interviews with confidence, armed with the means to impress—and hopefully land your dream job

5.0 von 5 Sternen Rethinking Interviews review 30. August 2014
Von M. Lawrence - Veröffentlicht auf
I received a free copy of What Color is Your Parachute: Guide to Rethinking Interviews from Blogging for Books in order to review. I think this is a really great little book. I do not have much interview experience. I tend to stay in a job forever. However, I am on the cusp of a career change and envision getting more practice than I may have ever anticipated.

Interviews are more than a little terrifying. I do not excel at selling myself. However, this guide tells you there is MORE to the interview than selling yourself. It gives great tips on what questions to expect during the interview, what is the underlying reason for some of the questions asked, and what questions you need to ask the interviewer. This is just to name a few of the very useful tips in this guide.

With a list price of under $13.00 and 112 pages, there is no great investment of time or money. I feel this guide can improve your interview skills, and consequently your chances of landing the job if for no other reason than giving you an idea of what to expect during an interview. You can put together answers for what will most likely be asked and plan a strategy for getting information from your prospective employer. All in all, I think this is a nice little book to have on hand for any job seeker.

This quick read offers very useful insights on interviewing strategies. Dick Bolles always shares excellent advice about the job search process and this book is no exception. The unique aspect of this book is that is it written in a very short format - great for someone short on time in our busy world. Read this book and you are sure to come away with valuable information. Implement the tips and you are sure to succeed in future interviews.
4.0 von 5 Sternen How'd you like to grasp interviewing in under 2 hours? 3. Juli 2014
Von Lavie Margolin - Veröffentlicht auf
You can read this book from cover to cover within two hours and gain an excellent grasp of interviewing strategy.

Mr. Bolles, the most recognizable career author over the last 40 years, provided an excellent overview of the interview process. He not only covers the basics of interview preparation, such as ways to research the company, but he provides follow up strategies as well.

Perhaps the greatest value of this book are in the tips on how to negotiate salary, located in chapter two as well as in appendix B. If you keep in mind these 16 pages on salary negotiation, you will stand a better chance of getting the job and can literally make hundreds of thousands more over the course of your career by interviewing effectively. Although I consider myself an expert in salary negotiation, I picked up a tip or two as well.

If you are picking up this book for an extensive list of interview questions, you've come to the wrong place. Mr. Bolles does cover a number of questions and answers but he focuses more on setting the stage for the interview as opposed to how to answer each individual question. People who like a bird's eye view of answering interview questions would benefit from Mr. Bolles approach. A book such as my Winning Answers to 500 Interview Questions would complement this one as it would help to fill in the gaps for those who want a more detailed approach of answering each specific question.

Overall: I recommend this book. Some great lessons from the master. $12.99 is a bit pricey for a 99 pager but if you employ the tips suggested, it is likely to pay for itself 1,000 fold.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Great Review - Too Man Commas 1. Juni 2014
Von HWheeler - Veröffentlicht auf
I just finished reading Richard Bolles' guide for resume writing, so his "What Color Is Your Parachute Guide to Rethinking Interviews" was a good companion read, and had considerably more, advice, as well. I do wish he had spent more space covering good thank you letters, but with an appendix on disabilities (a definite self esteem booster), another appendix on salary negotiation, and much more, the book includes plenty of great advice. Bolles focuses on setting up the job interview as a conversation where each party wants to know how well they fit each other. He also provides the most important possible job interview questions and answers. Anyone looking for work should read this book. Although Bolles' excessive and inappropriate use of commas throughout the book did bother me.

*Disclaimer: I received this book for free in exchange for my honest review of it.
