Über den Autor
Kimberly Santiago has worked for over a decade as a graphic designer and was recognised for her self-promotion in HOW magazine in 1992. She has won several awards for her design work. She has worked as a design instructor and as Department Chair of Graphic Design and Fine Art at a local college. Kimberly currently works in collage and is always exploring new media.

I have an extensive collection of books on the subject of collage, but Collage Playground is one of my favorites! Author Kimberly Santiago takes a whimsical, playful approach to creating collages that's very refreshing. The book is packed with 25 projects and 10 simple techniques that will unleash your inner child and make creating fun! The book is very user friendly with step by step photos and instructions that are very easy to follow.
Chapter two contains a wealth of information on creating your own original collage elements and incorporating items like vintage textiles, pressed flowers, old book pages, transparencies, and other elements into your artwork. I can't wait to try making my own collage sheets, and using vintage handkerchiefs in my projects. Intriguing techniques like paper weaving, altering book pages, making color inserts, creating your own rub-on transfers, painting, and many more make this book an exciting read!

Collage Playground: A Fresh Approach to creating Mixed-Media Art by Kimberly Santiago is full of wonderful layering and mixed media techniques for creating collages. Several steps beyond anything you may have done in school, these techniques would also apply to rubber stamping and scrapbooking very well.
She uses old textiles, scanned images and lots of color to create these works of art. The beginning has instructions for the techniques used, followed by projects. Because of the nature of the pieces, and because it is an art book, the projects are starting points rather than hard and fast step by step projects. They give you ideas for ways to piece, layer, and create your own collages.
My favorite project in the book is the Anatomy of a Flower, using simple techniques in an elegant way, it's the most inspirational for me. My favorite technique in the techniques section is weaving. The use of old textiles in the books just thrills me as well. There is a vase full of flowers made with vintage handkerchiefs that comes in as my second favorite. It's bright, colorful, cheerful and the technique would work just as well with scraps of vintage floral fabrics from old treasured dresses. Or for that matter, it would work if you abandoned the flowers/vase theme altogether and designed something of your own based around your scraps.
It's a lovely book, lots of colors and ideas. It reminded me of how much fun collages were to make as a teen, and showed me a lot of ideas for playing with them as a grown up.
My son, who has never done any collaging, really liked this book and has been collecting pop culture ephemera to make his own collages. So that's a bonus. I love seeing my teens inspired to create.

When I first ordered Kimberly Santiago's Collage Playground: A Fresh Approach to Creating Mixed Media Art, I immediately got caught back up in the busyness of life. When I finally carved out a few minutes to thumb through the book, my few minutes extended and extended. The book's organization is incredibly inviting; the pages are filled with delightful visuals and the writing is simple and clear.
When I buy a book that tells me `how to do something' I want to get started and this book will get you up and making art. The materials to gather and processes are clearly described in short, precise, easy-going paragraphs. I've been doing collage work off and on for years and this book offers information about some exciting new materials and methods to handle collage that I didn't know existed. She also clearly goes through many of the tried and true methods commonly used.
Kimberly Santiago's artwork is brilliant. She has a great sense of whimsy that often blends with a quiet, gentle depth. Her use of color and subtle collage layering calls you to linger. What is wonderful is that she lets you in on her path to that creation, encouraging you every step of the way to break out and make your own view of the world.
Get this book!!! Enjoy - look at her beautiful artwork and you'll find yourself pulling out your own treasures and vision to create.
