Charles Fraziers Erstlingsroman Cold Mountain erzählt die Geschichte einer langen Reise. In den letzten Monaten des Bürgerkriegs in den Vereinigten Staaten steht der verwundete Konföderierten-Veteran Inman von seinem Lazarettbett auf und begibt sich auf die lange Reise zurück nach Hause in die abgelegenen Hügel von North Carolina. Auf dem Weg begegnet er Gaunern und Geächteten, barmherzigen Samaritern und Mitgliedern der Bürgerwehr, hilfsbereiten und bösartigen Menschen. Die ganze Zeit hat Inman jedoch ein festes Ziel vor Augen: Er will zurück nach Cold Mountain und zurück zu Ada, der Frau, die er zurückgelassen hat. Die Frau, die er liebt, hat es währenddessen allerdings auch nicht leicht. Sie wuchs im exklusiven Ambiente der Charlestoner Gesellschaft auf und wurde von ihrem Vater, einem Prediger, in die Abgeschiedenheit von Cold Mountain gebracht, der aus gesundheitlichen Gründen aufs Land gezogen war. Doch auch nach dem Tode ihres Vater bleibt Ada dort. Zum einen wartet sie auf Inman, zum anderen, fühlt sie, daß ihr Schicksal in den Blue Ridge Mountains von North Carolina liegt.
Cold Mountain schildert die Geschichte zweier paralleler Reisen: Inmans körperliche Reise durch die verschiedenen Landschaften Amerikas und Adas innere Odysee, sich selbst verstehen zu lernen. Es ist die Liebe zum Detail, mit der beide Reisen beschrieben werden, die Fraziers Roman so besonders macht. Frazier gründet seine Handlung auf Familiengeschichte und mit den Charakteren Inman und Ada spricht er ihren historischen Vorbildern ein großes Kompliment aus. Charles Frazier's debut novel, Cold Mountain, is the story of a very long walk. In the waning months of the Civil War, a wounded Confederate veteran named Inman gets up from his hospital bed and begins the long journey back to his home in the remote hills of North Carolina. Along the way he meets rogues and outlaws, Good Samaritans and vigilantes, people who help and others who hinder, but through it all Inman's aim is true: his one goal is to return to Cold Mountain and to Ada, the woman he left behind. The object of his affection, meanwhile, has problems of her own. Raised in the rarified air of Charleston society, Ada was brought to the backwoods of Cold Mountain by her father, a preacher who came to the country for his health. Even after her father's death, Ada remains there, partly to wait for Inman, but partly because she senses her destiny lies not in the city but in the North Carolina Blue Ridge.
Cold Mountain is the story of two parallel journeys: Inman's physical trek across the American landscape and Ada's internal odyssey toward an understanding of herself. What makes Frazier's novel so satisfying is the depth of detail surrounding both journeys. Frazier based this story on family history, and in the characters of Inman and Ada he has paid a rich compliment to their historical counterparts. When I discovered that my cousin had written a book about our mutual great-great-uncle (our grandmother's grandfather's brother) I was intrigued, since I too grew up hearing the family stories, and especially those about Inman (his true family name, and my grandmother's maiden name). To my pleasant surprise, the book was astoundingly beautiful in form and especially compelling in the nature of word and sentence combinations. Ususally, I can speed read a book in a few hours, and I expected Cold Mountain to be a small diversion during a flight to Europe. Was I ever wrong! I spent several sessions over the next few days, reading and re-reading passages to savor the full impact of the complicated and sometimes obscure references. Fortunately, I grew up with the knowleged of the tools, etc. Charles mentions, and therefore, perhaps, have an even better appreciation of the descriptions than other readers. However, knowing as I do, the actual outcome of Inman's journey, I kept hoping that the author would somehow change the ending to one less shocking and sorrowful than befell the historical character; but alas, he did not, and Inman met his intended fate, once again, in fiction as well as fact. Bravo, cousin "Chuck!" Well done! Here's hoping you can produce more works of equal quality. Daniel A. Frazier.

Cold Mtn was completely engrossing. I became so involved in the journey of the two main characters, and the descriptions of their daily life rituals, that i could not put the book down until I knew what the outcome was to be in the end. That is the "love" part.
But the ending was so horrifyingly disappointing. I was on a reading marathon, determined one night to finish the book. I was so upset at the ending I threw the book across the room in disgust. That is the "hate" part.
was it worth it? sure. Maybe others won't be as violently upset by the ending as i was. Go ahead: read it.

I enjoyed this one up to about half way but then ran out of patience with it. The last half became a real struggle. The low rating is because it failed to live up to its early promise.
Inman's journey was for me the most interesting aspect. It shows us the normally unseen harsh and unpleasant side effects of the civil war with fascinating and sometimes repulsive detail. I am looking forward to seeing the movie 'Ride With The Devil' for another slant on the 'home guard'. The problem was that after a while his endless series of hair breadth escapes got a bit much for me. I could not identify with a man who seems to shrug off his daily near death experience and just keep trudging on.
Ada's exploration of farming life tended to become a grown-up 'Little House On The Prairie'.
Enjoy this book for its great description of the life and times but don't expect any plot progression or deep human insight.
