Pressestimmen

"'If Raymond Chandler had grown up in Northern Ireland, The Cold Cold Ground is what he would have written' (Peter Millar, Times) 'The names of David Peace and Ellroy are evoked too often in relation to young crime writers, but McKinty shares their method of using the past as a template for the present. The Cold Cold Ground is a crime novel, fast-paced, intricate and genre to the core.' (Eoin McNamee, Guardian) 'Detective Sergeant Sean Duffy could well become a cult figure' (Irish Independent)"

Kurzbeschreibung

Belfast. Spring 1981. Hunger strikes. Riots. Power cuts. A homophobic serial killer with a penchant for opera.A young woman's suicide that may yet turn out to be murder. On the surface, the events are unconnected, but then things -- and people -- aren't always what they seem.Detective Sergeant Duffy is the man tasked with trying to get to the bottom of it all. It's no easy job -- especially when it turns out that one of the victims was involved in the IRA, but last seen discussing business with someone from the UVF. Add to that the fact that as a Catholic policemen, it doesn't matter which side he's on, because neither side trust him -- and Sergeant Duffy really is in a no-win situation.Fast-paced, evocative and brutal, Cold, Cold Ground is a brilliant depection of Belfast at the height of the Troubles -- and a cop treading a thin, thin line.

Mehr als ein Thriller 8. April 2012
Von Spieler7 VINE™-PRODUKTTESTER
Format:Kindle Edition|Von Amazon bestätigter Kauf

Fast paced, realistic crime fiction of a period which amazingly seems almost forgotten by now. I remember times when collecting for the IRA in the Republic and the US was not uncommon and the news were filled with the events in Belfast. Besides giving a good overview of the time, this book is also quite good when it comes to describing police procedure.

The book I've been waiting for McKinty to write 9. Januar 2012
Von Seana Graham - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
The events of this novel largely take place in Belfast and neighboring towns in the spring of 1981. McKinty was still a child during this historic, tragic moment of Northern Ireland's recent history--and lived through them as a child--but I was an American twenty-something, traveling through England and other parts of Europe for the first time. I didn't get to Northern Ireland, of course--probably wouldn't have even dared if I'd thought of it. But the Hunger Strikes which form a part of the background of this story were much on the mind of everyone in England that we met, that and the Royal Wedding, as well as the assassination attempt on the Pope and other things that mark this novel as accurate to its specific moment. So, for me, there is an odd nostalgia that goes along with this story, and it had an almost uncanny ability to restore the memories of a long forgotten time.

This is the book I've half-consciously wanted McKinty to write since I first began reading him a few years ago. In the earlier Dead I Well May Be, we get a tantalizing look at life in Northern Ireland as the story opens, where we meet Michael Forsythe signing up for some illegal work in Belfast. No sooner do we start to settle into that life, though, than Michael finds himself fleeing the country entirely. Dead I Well May Be is a wonderful book, and one I highly recommend if you haven't read it yet, but there was a part of me that felt a bit cheated when we rather abruptly rejoin Michael, living an illegal alien's life in Harlem, New York. The Northern Ireland that Michael Forsythe slips out of is not quite the Northern Ireland of 1981, but they are older brother and younger brother to each other. There is a bomb at the beginning of Dead I Well May Be, there are more than one in The Cold Cold Ground. One thing that most of us in the world are fortunate enough not to have experienced is what its like to try and live a normal life alongside the violence of a local partisan war. This book, despite being a story about solving a murder, begins to tell us a little about that.

A Troubles Story Told The Right Way 20. Januar 2012
Von G. Brennan - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
Adrian McKinty is one of my favourite writers. He's a forerunner in the latest generation of Northern Irish crime writers. And this is the book he was born to write. A police procedural featuring a catholic RUC officer set against the backdrop of the 1981 hunger strikes. Talk about ambitious... But McKinty is a master of the craft and he has applied all of his talent to The Cold, Cold Ground.

The writing is electrifying, the characters top notch and his ability to spin a great yarn is enviable. If you want to learn a little about that crazy chapter in Northern Irish history and read an excellent story as well, you need look no further.

Buy this book.

While I was chugging beers and wearing a Devo hat 16. Januar 2012
Von Sean P. Reardon - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
In 1981 I was 16, without a care in the world, while across the Atlantic in Ireland...

Having read and enjoyed all of McKinty's previous crime novels, and based on the description of this one, I was pretty confident that it would be discretionary entertainment dollars well spent. However, no author I have read, no matter how much I have enjoyed their past work gets a free pass. In fact, with each novel, the stakes and expectations are raised and as soon as I feel they are relying on old tricks or mining tired, predictable and clichéd themes, I'll move on. This was billed as a police procedural and I'm not really a fan of that genre, so a level playing field was set.

What I experienced was a fearless, hard-hitting, and dare I say, important and perhaps groundbreaking novel. It also enlightened me as to what my aversion of the procedural genre stemmed from. The story takes place in 1981 where the cops for the most part, relied on detective work and instinct, rather than technology. This is a world before cell phones, DNA, and all the other crutches that are so commonplace in modern crime fiction. Sean Duffy is a great character and If you took the best qualities of John Thaw's Inspector Morse and The Sweeney's John Regan, added a jigger of cool, and a splash of very entertaining wit, you'll get an idea of what he is all about.

The first person narrative was done superbly and I felt like I was side-by-side with Duffy and his excellent supporting cast of characters- in the Land Rover, on the streets, at the station, and all the other locations the story took me to.

I am well-versed in the "Troubles" or at least as much as you can be from reading numerous non-fiction and historical fiction regarding the subject, but the superb writing, excellent story, and McKinty's intimate first-hand knowledge and experience, enabled The Cold, Cold, Ground to take me to a time and place, like none of that reading possible could.

A great read and I was pleasantly suprised to find the first chapter of the next "Duffy" installment was included in my kindle version. And what a opener it was!
