At first glance a lot of the information in this book seems like common sense but, as the authors explain, it is quite rare for us to act in these ways. We tend to act in ways that are harmful to ourselves and our relationships and this book goes some way to showing you how to break out of these past moulds and create new ways of behaving. It follows the basic 'dummies' format, with various icons, cartoons, clear headings and 'part of tens' at the back, so if you know the format you will know what to expect. This book introduces CBT, helps you spot errors in your thinking, helps you define problems and goals, focuses on a few specific problems (like OCD, anger and low self esteem), helps you move on from past events and overcome obstacles, looks at ways to maintain your progress and to find a CBT professional, as well as way more besides. This also has an appendix with useful contacts and another of various CBT forms that you can use. Overall this is very comprehensive and I think that if you take the time to utilise the information explained to you and stick with it, this should offer up some real results. It is worth noting that even if you have no major issues that seem to be crippling your actions or outlook, this book still has much to offer to help you live more meaningfully and make small changes to get that little bit more out of life. A clear, informative read.

I've read Aaron Beck's book about CBT for depression, and some articles about CBT; but this book stands out for its easily readable explanation of what CBT is and the practical advice it gives. It covers a wide range of psychological problems too--depression, anger, lack of self-confidence, and others. Even if you seek professional help--which is also covered--you can benefit from reading this to understand how the technique works and how much it can help you.

I've always believed that changing your thinking can change your life. And CBT fits right into that. This book has practical ways of helping you change your thinking, like checklists, etc. Altbough it should probably be considered just a "starting point" for CBT, and not really a complex, in-depth book on it, like anything by Albert Ellis or Aaron Beck might be, it's a wonderful start. Do buy this book!

Excellent manual. CBT, or cognitive behavioral therapy, is a school of psychotherapy that aims to help people overcome their emotional problems. This book will be useful for persons in therapy as well as for anyone desiring a closer look at this preferred method of dealing with emotional and psychological problems. The authors are therapists who practice CBT, and this book is in its second edition. Thorough yet highly readable. Very little knowledge is taken for granted. For instance, I found their listing of common emotions helpful. (Part II, Defining Problems and Setting Goals) They are: angry, anxious, ashamed, disappointed, embarrassed, envious, guilty, hurt, jealous, love, sad. You may think this facile, yet each of these major emotions has about a dozen synonyms to help you identify your feelings. Then you may ask, are they healthy or unhealthy emotions? If you identify an unhealthy emotion, can you turn it into a healthy negative emotion? You will learn to challenge common thinking errors. Most people in therapy have already read David Burns' book, Feeling Good: The New Mood Therapy. CBT for Dummies takes that material farther. In a section entitled "Spotting Errors in Your Thinking", I found a good review of these cognitive distortions: catastrophising, all-or-nothing thinking, fortune telling, mind reading, emotional reasoning, overgeneralizing, labeling, making demands, mental filtering, disqualifying the positive, low frustration tolerance, and personalizing.
Each chapter begins with very specific goals for that section and exercises to implement the material. Jargon is often used, but explained. "Catching NATs" (negative automatic thoughts) is an exercise that helps you see the connection between your thoughts and emotions. The ABC exercise involves understanding the activating trigger, checking your beliefs about the trigger, and identifying the consequence of acting on the belief.
There is material on body dysmorphic disorder, obsessions, anxiety disorder, depression, becoming more mindful, setting goals, abolishing addictions, overcoming low self-esteem and accepting yourself, cooling your anger, viewing the past in healthy ways, tackling common obstacles to progress, working with professionals, 10 healthy attitudes for living, ways to lighten up, and 2 appendices with resource and forms to take the CBT process farther in your own life. This book is a fabulous book to keep in your own reference library. You never know when you may have to challenge a toxic thought!

Then get this book. I've had some depression and anxiety for over two years now. I've also read quite a few self-help boks and they all have their nugget of knowledge but, this book is not an inspirational-motivational-you-can-do-it (im not saying these dont work) kind of book. This book cuts all the BS and philosophizing and gets you out of your head to have a great mental health. This book represents a great deal in my long term rehab and man transformation.
