Peter Seibel interviews 15 of the most interesting computer programmers alive today in Coders at Work, offering a companion volume to Apress's highly acclaimed best-seller Founders at Work by Jessica Livingston. As the words “at work" suggest, Peter Seibel focuses on how his interviewees tackle the day-to-day work of programming, while revealing much more, like how they became great programmers, how they recognize programming talent in others, and what kinds of problems they find most interesting. Hundreds of people have suggested names of programmers to interview on the Coders at Work web site: www.codersatwork.com. The complete list was 284 names. Having digested everyone's feedback, we selected 15 folks who've been kind enough to agree to be interviewed: * Frances Allen: Pioneer in optimizing compilers, first woman to win the Turing Award (2006) and first female IBM fellow * Joe Armstrong: Inventor of Erlang * Joshua Bloch: Author of the Java collections framework, now at Google * Bernie Cosell: One of the main software guys behind the original ARPANET IMPs and a master debugger * Douglas Crockford: JSON founder, JavaScript architect at Yahoo! * L. Über den Autor
Peter Seibel is a serious developer of long standing. In the early days of the web, he hacked Perl for Mother Jones Magazine and Organic Online. He participated in the Java revolution as an early employee at WebLogic which, after its acquisition by BEA, became the cornerstone of the latter's rapid growth in the J2EE sphere. He has also taught Java programming at UC Berkeley Extension. He is the author of Practical Common LISP from Apress.

Chances are you are planning on buying this book because you either read "Founders at Work" by Jessica Livingston or you have an interest in computer science and/or programming (or both, like me). You won't regret reading "Coders at Work" then, though it is less entertaining and diverse than the aforementioned "Founders at Work".
The first thing you have to do to is to ignore the title (if, like me, you associate "Coder" with some kiddie scripting lame flash websites in his spare time) and instead focus on the list of people interviewed for this book. For me these were "Jamie Zawinski", "Peter Norvig", "Ken Thompson" and of course "Donald Knuth" that I knew beforehand. The curiosity about how someone managed to get Don Knuth into a book which has "Coder" spelled on its front should suffice as a motivation to buy it ;)
The structure is very similar to "Founders": One chapter (i.e. interview) per person, 30-40 pages each, beginning with a short history of that persons achievements in the field. The interview consists of two intervowen parts: A list of standard questions Seibel asks each interviewee as well as some personal questions, which sometimes arise out of answers to previous questions. Some of the standard questions are about the kind of debugging technique people use, whether they have tried all kinds of different programming techniques (pair programming, extreme programming, literate programming), whether they have read Knuth and think that a formal math education is (still) necessary to be a good programmer. Sometimes the answer to these questions seems repetitive (everyone seems to use printf to debug and no one read Knuth cover to cover) and sometimes Seibel doesn't really realize that the answer to his next questions was already included in the previous answer. Since these questions were aimed at the really practical aspects of programming I missed questions about SCM (Source Code Management) being used in the process.
The more interesting and entertaining part of the interviews are about the career of each person, starting with their very first contact with programming. Another aspect that was very enlightening and entertaining about this book is how these people, most of whom have a vast amount of knowledge about compiler design, have differing opinions about C as a user-level programming language and how many of them talk extensively about Lisp, something I haven't concerned myself that much with even as a CS student. Seibel also asked how the future of programming should look like, especially in the light of some inherent security flaws in some languages and serious limitations in others. Though you might not always agree with the answers, they still make interesting points.
Ultimately it's an interesting and detailed book which does take some stamina to get through at some points. Luckily they put Knuth at the end, so there's your motivation again.

In diesen Buch werden eine reihe von bedeutenden Programmierern interviewt. Da die meisten von denen etwas interessantes zu sagen haben, ist das ganze überwiegend spannend zu lesen.
Vermutlich versteht es sich von selbst, aber an dieser Stelle möchte ich noch anmerken, dass es sich an Programmierer wendet und nur von solchen verstanden wird. Dabei muss man von keiner Sprache oder Technologie viel verstehen, aber sollte doch von jedem wichtigen Meileinstein mal gehört haben, um die Beiträge einordnen zu können. Wirklich Spaß wird man daran auch nur haben, wenn man sich ein wenig mit der Technologie der 70er bis 90er auskennt, da die meisten Interviews sehr vergangenheitsorientiert sind.
Die größte Schwäche ist die Leistung des Hauptautors bzw. Interviewers. Er interviewt sehr verschiedene Charaktere, aber der Aufbau ist sehr eintönig und wiederholend. Somit ist es sehr schwer, sich hinterher noch daran zu erinnern, welcher Programmierer was gesagt hatte. Auch passiert es oft, dass ein Thema sich gerade sehr spannend entwickelt, und der Interviewer vorschnell einen Themenwechsel herbeiführt. An anderen Stellen möchte ein Programmierer mal nichts zu einem Thema sagen, aber der Autor bohrt immer wieder nach, was zu nichts führt.
Wäre das Buch kürzer, würde vieles davon gar nicht auffallen. Wer es aber von vorne nach hinten durcharbeitet, kommt kaum umhin, diese Schwächen zu bemängeln.

It is difficult not to be to enthusiastic about this book:
- it is very informative, as a coder, I learnt a lot by reading this book, how projects are done, what went wrong, which tools are used and a little bit of history.
- it is a pleasure to read, because peter seibel really asks the right questions and his transcription of the interviews is well done.
- it is amusing, to read the opinions and thoughts of this shooting-star-coders and to agree or disagree.
