Produktbeschreibungen

From Library Journal

An important addition to the reference libraries of teachers and students of ballet. Warren, soloist with the Pennsylvania Ballet for 11 years and now associate professor of dance at the University of South Florida, explains the correct execution of every step in the ballet vocabulary. Dancers from the American Ballet Theatre and the Joffrey Ballet appear in over 2600 photographs and illustrate the movement. Part 1 of the book covers basic concepts of training, physical characteristics of the ideal dancer, and suggestions for conducting a successful class. Part 2 is devoted to sequential photographs of more involved steps and definitions of terminology. Warren includes stylistic variations--Soviet, Italian, French, etc. This book is unprecedented in its detail and clarity. For anyone with a serious interest in ballet. Highly recommended.

Synopsis

In more than 2600 photographs, professional dancers (from such companies as the American Ballet Theatre and the Jaffrey Ballet) demonstrate in sequence every movement in the classical repertoire, from the most basic to the most advanced. Each photograph is accompanied by a text that details appropriate teaching techniques and describes the proper execution of each step. Warren combines the best instructional aspects of several international schools, including Soviet, Danish and English. A glossary defines common dance terms, and a pronunciation guide provides phonetic transcriptions of French ballet terms. A chapter specially for teachers delineates a variety of methods classroom-tested by Warren, a teacher-training expert and former professional dancer with extensive credentials.

Der Verlag über das Buch

Learn the basics of ballet without ever leaving home
With this brilliantly imagined and beautifully achieved work, Gretchen Warren has created the first comprehensive, photographically illustrated reference and teaching guide on classical ballet technique. In more than 2,600 photographs, Johan Renvall, Cynthia Harvey, Susan Jaffe, and an array of other dancers from such companies as the American Ballet Theatre and the Joffery Ballet demonstrate in sequence every movement in the classical repertoire, from the most basic to the most advanced.

The book's design matches each photograph with captions that detail appropriate teaching techniques and describe the proper execution of each step. In her text, Warren combines the best aspects of the teaching of several international schools, including the Danish and Soviet syllabi. A glossary defines common dance terms, and a pronunciation guide provides phonetic transcriptions of French ballet terms. A chapter especially for teachers describes the preparation, structure, and content of a successful ballet class and offers a variety of methods classroom-tested by Warren, a teacher-training expert and former professional dancer with extensive credentials.

Especially designed to meet the diverse needs of American dancers today, "Classical Ballet Technique" is a professionally accurate and definitive reference source for students and teachers, the result of twenty years of study and research.

Gretchen Ward Warren studied at London's Royal Ballet and the National Ballet School of Washington, D.C. She was soloist with the Pennsylvania Ballet for eleven years and ballet mistress of American Ballet Theatre II from 1978 to 1983. She is an associate professor of dance at the University of South Florida and frequently appears as a master teacher on the national and international circuits.
