Kurzbeschreibung
Toby Stephens stars in this BBC Radio 4 full-cast dramatisation of Raymond Chandler's final completed Philip Marlowe mystery. Fast-talking, trouble-seeking private eye Philip Marlowe is a different kind of detective: a moral man in an amoral world. California in the '40s and '50s is as beautiful as a ripe fruit and rotten to the core, and Marlowe must struggle to retain his integrity amidst the corruption he encounters daily. In "Playback", Marlowe is awakened early in the morning by a phone call from a lawyer. Clyde Umney instructs him to meet the eight o'clock train from Chicago, and shadow one of the passengers. The lady in question, Eleanor King, is beautiful, classy and clearly unhappy. Obediently, Marlowe follows her - all the way to Esmerelda, where she's going under the name Betty Mayfield and being leaned on by a cheap blackmailer. Stuck doing a sneaky job for people he doesn't like, Marlowe feels even grubbier than usual: and he's soon in more trouble than usual too as he comes up against gangsters, hard men and a hitman...Starring Toby Stephens, this exciting dramatisation retains all the verve of Chandler's last novel.

"Playback" sure is a rather disappointing last Marlowe novel in that it doesn't pack most of the excitement of its predecessors. It's not set in LA but Esmeralda, and this time Chandler's characters all feel a little too cliché. As a fellow reviewer remarked, it feels like Chandler was just going through the motions.
Nonetheless, "Playback" has a few things going for it - first and foremost, it still is Chandler and Marlowe. Marlowe is still the same character the reader of Chandler has come to love, even though I felt that his memories of and feelings for Linda felt a little out of place. But maybe that's just Marlowe getting old and lonesome; it fits the character if you think about it. Also, it's a pretty short read, so you'd only lose one or two evenings in the company of your trusted PI - I've had evenings far worse than that.
If you love Chandler, don't hesitate and buy this book, if just for the sake of completeness. It's not as good as the rest of the Marlowe mysteries, but it still is Chandler. And by that, it still is better than most.

The setting--a coastal town called Esmerelda--is well-evoked. The observations are clever and occasionally poignant. And the mystery surrounding Miss Betty Mayfield shows real promise. However, this time out the characters are familiar and too genteel, the revelations are unconvincing, and the whole thing feels tired, as if Chandler were simply going through the motions. A flat note on which to end a career.

Last novel of Chandler, and Philip Marlowe. On the surface is a classic detective story.But you may be faced with a couple of deep reflexions; about solitude and the individual. About existence.Surprisingly bitter. I find it close to Sartre's The Nausea. Perhaps also to T.S Eliot, The Wasteland.
