Synopsis

The book is compatible with all tin whistles, pennywhistles and flageolets in the key of D. No previous knowledge of music is required. Using tablature based on the first seven letters of the alphabet, the complete beginner can learn to play a simple tune. Through a selected series of folk tunes, beginners are guided through all the basics of playing, one step at a time.

The Clarke Tin Whistle Book by Bill Ochs is fantastic. It starts unlike other books with learning the first tunes and playing very easy songs. Only after that he starts with music theory, so you do not get irritaded or bored with theory as a begginer, but start playing songs and the learn basic music theory. And while you succeed in playing Bill Ochs learns you the important things about music and you do not even notice!
For advanced tin whistle players the book is good as well (probably not the best one, that's why I rated the book only with 4 stars) for they can skip the first lessons and start playing quite challenging songs.
The CD is well done as well but be sure your whistle is in key D for the CD players whistle is in D as well. You can learn playing the whistle with every whistle but it will sound different and maybe confuse bloody beginners.

in deutsch nochmal kurz: perfektes buch für anfänger, für fortgeschrittene nur dann zu empfehlen wenn man schon einige bücher hat und man nach abwechslung sucht, da das buch wahrschinlich zu leicht sein wird. die songauswahl ist gut, spätere stücke durchaus auch für fortgeschrittene. einzig und alleine amazing grace habe ich vermisst. die cd ist auch gelungen, für blutige anfänger sollte noch erwähnt werden, dass die whistle auf der cd in d gestimmt ist. man kann zwar mit jeder whistle die songs spielen, diese werden dann aber anders klingen und vielleicht den ein oder anderen anfänger verwirren. lernen kann mans aber mit JEDER whistle.

Das Buch ist einfach fabelhaft. Endlich fand ich einen Werk, in dem alle Griffs und Tricks gezeigt wurden, die verstreut in vielen kleinen Buchleinen erwähnt und zum Teil sehr eigenartig erklärt wurden. Die CD im Anhang zeigt alle Beispiel und das Buch selbst beinhaltet ein reichliches Repertoire. Bin mit ihm völlig zufrieden und würde es jedem empfehlen, der bereits Zweidutzend Melodien gelernt hat, aber ist immer noch nicht mit der Technik zufrieden und sich verzweifelt die Frage stellt, wie er das Niveau von Paddy Moloney und John Sheahan erreicht :)

The Best Tin Whistle Tutorial

If you want to learn to play the tin whistle, or if you've begun to play and need some direction, this set is by far the best available tin whistle tutorial on the market. Bill Ochs is a brilliant player and teacher. Buy this set, work through it, and then go to New York and take a lesson with Bill. You'll find all the information you need at his web site (look for the web address in the book).

Great book for beginners

Very clear instructions. This book is obviously designed by someone who enjoys teaching the tinwhistle. In addition to tinwhistle basics, there are clear explanations of the basics of reading music. The lessons are well structured. This book is a good guide to people who want to learn the instrument on their own. It also has a good selection of tunes. Well worth the price.
