Padraig Yeates is a journalist, publicist and trade union activist. He is also a distinguished social and labour historian and the author of Lockout, the standard work on the great 1913 labour dispute.

Yeates 'A City in Wartime' is a brilliant piece of social history that provides an excellent contextualisation of this transformational time in Dublin. One the strengths of this work is the superb job Yeates does in putting the Rising into the context of the times, exploring the impacts on everyday lives, but also avoid over-emphasising specific events.
A City in Wartime is wonderfully engaging narrative, peopled with real characters superbly clothed from documentary evidence. Everyday life and the people of Dublin come alive.
