The appeal of the City Secrets series is truly novel. Instead of the customary (and often rather bland) comments on the points of interest and topography of Rome, this fascinating volume presents sharply observed views from some of the world's most important artists, archaeologists, architects and writers, with historians adding their own layer of expertise. The Sistine Chapel, for instance, is covered in fascinating paragraphs by a rare bookseller, a historical specialist, the architect Richard Meier, and others. Each gives individual insights into the subject. The watering holes garner an equally lively mix of opinions: the bar Sant'Eustachio is described as serving a really great granita di caffi (coffee-flavoured ice) and is fun to hang around in to watch carabinieri and parliamentarians, while another writer informs us that this is the place to buy the world's best cappuccino--and why buying a cup to display on the shelf at home is, to the hardcore, the ultimate status symbol! Time and again, this iconoclastic approach throws up the sharpest of insights: architect Robert Livesey, for instance, describes a Bernini stoup for holy water as demonstrating a voluptuous use of marble, while the antique shops of the Via Giulia are recommended by historian Jayne Merkel as the most enticing collection of shops she has ever seen, en masse, anywhere.

The thinking behind this pocket-sized series is clear: City Secrets: Rome will be a highly attractive adjunct to whatever guidebooks you may take to Rome. The pick-and-mix approach is appealing: if you're not tempted by one voice, simply move on to the next. Few will notice that the maps on double pages lose detail in the middle, or the preponderance of American voices. The high production standards and variety of views available make City Secrets: Rome a highly cherishable little book. --Barry Forshaw

From Library Journal

Rome, Padua & Assisi is a useful pilgrimage guide for the Jubilee Year 2000 and would serve as a good starting point for mapping out city tours. It offers a helpful historical and cultural background to each of the three cities (the most thorough is the chapter on Rome that runs well over 60 pages). As the authors discuss each city, they not only point out the sites of particular interest to visitors but also provide a list of hotels and eateries, an inventory of Jubilee 2000 events for each city, and a survivor's guide for getting around. In addition, the authors suggest other Italian destinations worth visiting. Although the descriptions of city sites are not adequately detailed, they are well ordered and clearly presented. In City Secrets: Rome, a number of architects, artists, writers, archaeologists, and historians at the prestigious American Academy in Rome write of their favorite spots in the city. Reading this book is like attending a reception at the academy and listening to academy residents offer glowing accounts of some of Rome's many treasures. Although rather small in size, it could serve as a delightful vade-mecum for tourists in Rome and provide them with an artful insight into Rome's familiar or not-so-familiar attractions. Both guides are recommended for libraries with some demand for travel books.

This book succeeds in revealing the soul of the Eternal City called Rome. Choose a neighborhood from the introductory map and then read the suggestions for sites, restaurants and stores eloquently descibed for the location.

I found new appreciation for obsure piazzos as well as famous sites. The collections of opinions gathered in this book helped me to see Rome as as Architect, Painter, Archeologist as well as the Landscape Architect that I am. I look forward to future additions about some of my other favorite cities.
