Accompanied by a disparate crew of untested young keepers, the dragons embarked on a harsh journey into the unknown along the toxic Rain Wild River. Battling starvation, a hostile climate, and treacherous enemies, dragons and humans began to forge magical connections, bonds that have wrought astonishing transformations for them all. And though Kelsingra is finally near, their odyssey has only begun.
Because of the swollen waters of the Rain Wild River, the lost city can be reached only by flight—a test of endurance and skill beyond the stunted dragons’ strength. Venturing across the swift-running river in tiny boats, the dragon scholar Alise and a handful of keepers discover a world far different from anything they have ever known or imagined. Again, I did finish the book in a few days, since I hardly could put it down to go to work. Adding more complexity and at the same time tieing together many strings ob the previous books, it was an amazing time for me with dragon keepers, Captain Leftrin and all the other characters, that were discribed so lively.
Yes, the book has an open end, which is unusual, since all other Robin Hobb tales come as trilogies, this one for sure will be continued, hopefully with another set of three books :-) ...

Kelsingra, die mystischen Stadt der "Elderlings" ist gefunden. Blöd nur, dass die Gruppe um Thymara, Alise und Captain Leftrin nirgendswo in der Nähe ihren Anker setzen können. Da die Drachen, mit einer Ausnahme, noch immer zu schwach zum fliegen sind und Distanz über den Fluß nicht schwimmen können, bleibt der Gruppe der Drachenhüter nichts anderes übrig, als sich auf einem Stück Land am anderen Ufer niederzulassen.
Etwas überraschend fand ich den Handlungsstrang um Selden Vestrit. Er war nicht sonderlich präsent in den ersten beiden Bänden und plötzlich bekommt er recht viele Seiten. Der Leser erfährt, dass Selden von irgendwelchen Chalced-Leuten in deren Land entführt wurde und nun verkauft werden soll. Es wird aber schnell deutlich, dass die Chalcedianer noch eine größere Rolle in der Gesamthandlung spielen werden. Denn wie wir erfahren, hat auch Alise' (ungewollter) Ehemann und Berufsmacho Hest mit einem Erpresser aus Chalced zu kämpfen...geschieht ihm recht!
Im zweiten Teil fehlte mir noch irgendwie der rote Faden, der wurde hier aber vollkommen etabliert und spannend weitergeführt. Die Handlung um Selden und Hest fand ich etwas zu ausschweifend bzw. hätte man vor allem Selden vorher etwas mehr in der Vordergrund rücken sollen...aber gut, ich schätze mal, dass die meisten Leser dieser Reihe sowieso auch "die Zauberschiffe" vorher gelesen haben und somit Selden kennen. Auch schön, dass man mehr von Malta und Rheyn liest!
Ich war nach den ersten zwei Bänden noch skeptisch, aber alle Zweifel haben sich in Luft aufgelöst. Zwar reicht die Reihe nicht an die Zauberschiffe und die Weitseher Chroniken heran, aber ist trotzdem eine mehr als würdige Ergänzung.
(Ich schreibe bewusst Ergänzung, da meiner Meinung nach diese Reihe erst gelesen werden sollte, wenn man zumindest "Die Zauberschiffe" gelesen hat)

The rating reflects the sad and annoying fact that it seems to be impossible to finish a story in one book. Please stop this BS. Sorry, don`t buy this book, wait till (approx.) May 2013 for the next volume.
By the way - it is fun to read the book - it is a little bit faster than Dragon keeper/heaven.
Three points off for the missing ending "in mid sentence" - not even a cliff hanger
One Point of for the funny setting that the whole company is able to travel for 100 of miles upriver but is afterwards not able to cross the river
