Charyn's latest is a truly wild combination of stream-of-consciousness fantasy, burning political satire, societal indictment, Greek tragedy, and Marx Brothers comedy. It is wacky, brilliant, provocative, and disturbing, and like much of Charyn's work, readers are likely to love it or hate it. Call him Isaac. Or Sindbad the Sailor. Or The Big Guy. Or even The Pink Commish. He answers to all of these and more, depending on time, place, and mood, as he goes careening through Charyn's never-never land transmogrified from New York City. In this, Isaac's tenth adventure (El Bronx, 1997, etc.), the most beloved mayor in Gotham history is about to widen his netreluctantly. He's yielded to the blandishments of the Democratic Party bigwigs whove told him he's needed to rescue the scandal-ridden ticket led by J. Michael Storm. But not everybody adores Isaac. Storms wife doesn't. The FBI doesn't. A couple of highly placed lowlife cops don't; and the list goes on. So from time to time, gun-toting Isaac gets disarmed, disabled, and just about discon tinued. Among his assailants islamentablyMargaret Tolstoy, she to whom Isaac has given his heart. But Margaret is also the most renowned double agent in espionage history, and a girl's got to do what a girl's paid to do. At length, the stage is set for th e climactic TV debate: J. Michael versus the incumbent. Consequences transcend the political, a fact that Isaac discovers when he has to fend off a particularly vicious attack. He's aided this time by a pet rodent named Raskolnikov, who distracts the atta cker by biting off half his nose. If any of this sounds bizarre, it's because you haven't yet been conditioned, which is to say you havent tripped with Charyn. As usual, unflagging energy on the part of the writer. New York City's Madison Square Garden is hosting the Democratic Party's National Convention. J. Michael Storm, who ended the worst strike in the history of baseball, is going to be nominated as the party's presidential candidate. The city's mayor, Isaac Sidel, has been selected as Storm's running mate in order to counterbalance the scandals of the top half of the ticket.

While the world focuses on J. Michael, Isaac has a city to run and a murder to investigate. A father has apparently killed his son. Both were city cops. Isaac investigates and soon finds himself confronting a precinct captain, backed by powerful friends, who delivers murder upon demand. As he tries to keep his city clean, The Big Guy (Isaac) faces off against a myriad of foes who want him dead.

Jerome Charyn must be the reincarnation of Lewis Carroll and Sidel is Alice as no one paints New York City weirder and more interesting than this author does. The story line of the tenth Sidel tale still keeps a strange freshness that continues to show the unending imagination of the author. CITIZEN SIDEL is not for everyone. However, anyone who relishes an off beat political thriller mixed in with a well-designed police procedural that comes from inside the looking glass will enjoy this novel and series.
