I love reading Cathy Kellys books and so I didn't hesitate when I bought this. Unfortunately I did not realize it was a collection of short stories... I am not a very big fan of short stories and I was a bit disappointed.
The stories are good and I liked nearly all of them. But... not all the stories are Christmas stories. And as I read this book just before Christmas to get into the festive mood, it did not do what I hoped it would.
My recommendation to all you Cathy Kelly fans: Buy the book and read it, you will like it. BUT do not buy it to read before Christmas!

I don't like to write a bad review, but this book really deserves one.
If you expect it to be about what the title promises, well, forget it.
To start with, it's a collection of 18 stories, not a novel. Next, only 4 of those stories have a vague Christmassy theme. Plus, they are not romantic. And never mind magic.
I collect Christmas romances, but this isn't one.
For that money you can buy 3 or 4 real Christmas romances.
For instance:
Royal Christmas (Mills&Boon),
Christmas Carol (Flora Speer),
Christmas Fairytales - The MacGregor Brides (Nora Roberts),
Christmas with a Vampire (Harlequin).
Happy Christmas!!!!

Curl up in front of a roaring fire

Another nice and easy read from an author who admits in the acknowledgements that she didn't like writing short stories! I didn't realise until I started reading this that it was a book of short stories. There are 19 stories ranging from about 20-40 pages so readers will speed through them in no time. The stories are normally just the right length as well, to give some depth to the characters, without making them seem insignificant and forgettable.
There are a couple of weak stories in my opinion, and The Gap Year sticks out as being the weakest in my opinion. There are a couple of others, but that one in particular, I didn't really like. Not sure what it was, it was a perfectly good story, there just seemed to be something missing.
Not all of the stories are Christmas themed either, but they all include some kind of magic. The ones that are Christmas-themed make you want to curl up in front of a roaring fire (which the blurb states you must do and I don't have one!) and feel all festive.

Wonderful, truly entertaining

I'm not usually a reader of short stories but I could put this one down. Loved every mnute of it. Perfect for curling up in front of the fire and looking foward to Christmas.

I enjoyed this collection of stories, though I didn't realise that is what it was until I started reading. Cathy Kelly has the enviable ability to get right into the quirks of ordinary everyday people. Incidents in the lives of everyday characters whom you may meet in the street or live next door to, is what Kelly writes best.
