I have been looking for a way to study herbs so that they come alive. Studying single herbs in TCM school is usually just memorizing a big list. This book actually talks about how to use the herbs, and helps me differentiate very similar herbs. Also, it is conversational in tone and written/formatted in a way that's easy to digest. It is packed with valuable information and clinical insights, some you won't even find in Bensky, yet it is only 200+ pages. Too bad it's out of print. I bought it used--it's the most expensive book I bought but well worth it.

I pre-ordered this book before it was even available. The suspense built, and I am happy to say that it was worth the wait. It cuts right through to the type of comparisons I wish were covered in school more thoroughly. Does it fill in all the blanks? No. But no one book could. I would wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone in the clinical practice. As an example, thea author compares gui zhi with ma huang. Surely we know ma huang is much stronger for releasing the exterior and inducing sweating. But the author goes on to point out that gui zhi is sweet and therefore has a tropism for the spleen and thus the flesh. This makes it a good choice for treating aches and pains in the muscles. She also points out that it is twig, thus looking like limbs, is good for pain in the arm and shoulder relate to bi syndrome. We may have learned all this in school, but its a good refresher. Of course, the author notes that ma huang is more acrid and not sweet, thus more harsh, and......well, just read the book. Its worth the cash.

I was so lost in my first year of herbs trying to memorize each one in Bensky until I bought this book. What a life changer! It really helps a new student understand the herbs relationship to its category, meridians and tastes so it makes it VERY easy to understand why an herb does what it does. Wohoooo!! I get it!! FINALLY that aha moment!!
