Charlie Evers is a tenth grade student at an international school in Shanghai, China. He has one last research assignment before summer break -- the damming of the Yangtze River and the Three Gorges Dam. He will never finish this assignment. Ignoring all the warnings about Chinese Internet censors, he navigates to sites that shred the government about the building of the dam. He uses words like democracy and corruption in his searches. He thinks that just because he's a teenage American student he won't get into trouble.

The Ministry of Public Security could care less who he is -- Charlie is now on their radar. His dad had warned him. Charlie knew the meaning of phrases like threatening the social order, endangering state security, spreading rumors, and subverting state authority.

The safe life he has always taken for granted is suddenly ripped away when his dad disappears. Three weeks later Charlie is kidnapped. Imprisoned in a corroded cabin well below the waterline, a seven-day trip up the Yangtze takes him deep into China's turbulent past, and into a mind numbing conspiracy called ChinAlive -- a Democracy movement he could never have imagined, with a mission the world thought long dead -- the overthrow of the Chinese government.

During the time of his captivity Charlie Evers is transformed from high school student to conspirator, terrorist, and refugee. In less than three months he, his family, and ChinAlive will know if the risks, the planning, and all their sacrifices will be enough to change the fate of the Chinese people. The question in the back of all their minds -- will any of them still be alive to see their hopes and dreams come true.

Über den Autor und weitere Mitwirkende

Bob Jonas has been a school librarian for seventeen years -- four in Beaverton, Oregon and seven in China -- Shanghai, Beijing, and Hong Kong. In South America he worked for three years in Santiago, Chile, and then three years in the in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Currently, Bob is working as a school librarian in Erlangen, Germany. His travel and writing obsessions began after reading Thor Heyerdahl's Kon Tiki -- he was ten. His storytelling obsession began with his dad -- the greatest tale teller, BS artiste, mesmerizer, and raconteur the younger Jonas would ever lean on for inspiration. His first fifteen years of adulthood found him living the travel adventure in a semi-truck where he logged over a million miles in twelve western states. Unfortunately, the road stint lasted about twelve years too long. After too many speeding tickets, too many run-ins with angry weigh masters, bad, bad, and double bad winter weather, not to mention a real bad back, he knew it was time to find his old college degree and get himself somewhere else. As a storyteller, writer, and librarian he has motivated, inspired, stimulated, stirred, cajoled, provoked, and done what was necessary to instill a love of reading in kids on fours continents. ChinAlive is one of three novels he has written for young adults in the past decade, with four books for the illustrated market still off the grid, in deep cover -- but not for long.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A YA thriller you won't be able to put down 14. Mai 2013
Von Roland Smith - Veröffentlicht auf
My good friend, super writer, and fabulous librarian, Bob Jonas, has written a fabulous novel. I have visited his schools in both Shanghai and Beijing. His fast paste adventure novel for young adults is filled with fascinating history, non-stop action, and thrills that will keep you up late at night. I couldn't put it down. Available in both eBook and print from Amazon and B&N. Read it. You won't be sorry.

This book gives an interesting and unexpected background into Chinese politics and history. Centered around the Yangtze River-- Charlie Evers learns the hard way that what you do on the internet has consequences. Somebody/somewhere is paying attention to everything. Jonas does a fabulous job of bringing up this potential problem. A perfect classroom read for discussion on the internet pros/cons. His love of China and a hope for its future comes through despite the negative treatment of the current government towards anyone with thoughts of wanting a democratic or more free society.

5.0 von 5 Sternen AWESOME Book !!!!!!!! 19. Juli 2013

I totally enjoyed reading this book as this book was gripping right from the start and it was very difficult to put it down. This book has had many great qualities that I will name. First is the plot. The plot was exciting because it was a different culture and it had the 2008 olympic games. Second is the characters. I like the characters in this book too. the characters had many traits that made you understand the book more, these characters were more lively and it was interesting to see all their views. My favorite part was the ending. I love how there was a lot of action in the end. All in all, it was a great book and I hope there is a new book to follow up on this one. I would recommend this book to people who like action, suspense, and learning about the past because most of this book is true.

5.0 von 5 Sternen CHINALIVE ROX the YA Reader 4. Juli 2013
Von James Tindall - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition
ChinAlive by Bob Jonas is a great read for any young adult. This novel is part adventure, part mystery, and part coming of age story about fifteen year-old Charlie Evers who moves to China at age five with his parents. Charlie is intelligent, fluent in Mandarin, perceptive, and skilled in martial arts; he is reminiscent of heroes Artemis Fowl and Max Ride for his ability to tackle any adversity bad guys throw at him.

Early in the story Charlie is kidnapped after the disappearance of his father. Charlie's captors take him from Shanghai into the interior of China, up the mighty Yangtze River, and every chapter offers some gem of intrigue. Jonas does a fine job of describing the river; it truly takes on a life of its own as the novel progresses.

This books will be a valuable tool for teachers. It would make a great read aloud to middle schoolers and certainly on the curriculum front it will help those in language arts and social studies meet the Common Core State Standards through discussion on ancient and contemporary China.

I look forward to reading more from Bob Jonas!
