Von S. Werner VINE-PRODUKTTESTER am 2. Januar 2014
Format: Taschenbuch

Fun New Series 1. Oktober 2013
Von Mason Canyon - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
Maxie Pierce has had her share of bad relationships. She just needs to get out of the last one with Roberto and start clean. She already has her hands full worrying about her dad, Texas Jack Pierce, who has been missing for almost six weeks. To make matter worse, since her dad is missing and is king of the chili cook-off circuit, she has to team up with her half sister, Sylvia, to promote the family business at the Taos Chili Showdown.

But things go from bad to worse when Maxie finds Roberto's dead body only hours after publicly breaking up with him. Now she's in a hot seat and needs some answers before her goose is cooked.

Author Kylie Logan has developed an intriguing cast of characters for this new mystery adventure. The characters are reminders of people you'd see daily. They're likable and a bit quirky.

The story flows smoothly and at a good pace keeping your attention. The plot is fun to follow as you track down the killer with Maxie and laugh as she maneuvers through her personal life.

The detail descriptions of the area and activities places the reader in the middle of the action. Don't be surprised when you have a sudden urge for chili while reading.

CHILI CON CARNAGE is a delightful start to a fun new series sure to satisfy your reading appetite.

FTC Full Disclosure - This book was sent to me by the publisher as part of the author's virtual book tour in hopes I would review it. However, receiving the complimentary copy did not influence my review.

Wonderful start to a new series! 2. Oktober 2013
Von Melissa - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
One of my favorite kinds of cozy mysteries are "food related", and I really enjoyed this story about Maxie, and her half-sister Sylvia as they make the rounds in the chili-cook off circuit in the Hot-Cha Chili Seasoning Palace!
When someone is found dead, one of the sisters is accused of killing him.
As soon as I started reading it, it grabbed my attention. I really like the cute expressions and sayings that are mixed into the mystery.
The characters are well developed and the story well written.
Im looking forward to the next book in this series!

Kylie Logan Can Do Better! This Book Is Horrible! 11. Januar 2014
Von Avid Reader - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
I want to say I love Kylie Logan's other book series so I thought I would give this new series a try! To call it horrible is being generous. The main character of Maxie is nothing but an ill tempered brat who can't understand why her sister may behave like she does. Would you want to have anything to do with someone who was the result of your father not being able to keep his pants zipped and dumping your mother for the other woman? I doubt it! Maxie doesn't seem to understand how it could hurt her sister. in fact, she seems to condone what her father does.

Maxie is constantly telling people Sylvia is her half sister not her sister. That got really old fast. We get it, Maxie!!!! Sorry but I have friends who have siblings that came from other marriages and they consider them sisters and brothers not halves! Whereas Sylvia had dreams of being a pastry chef, Maxie just is a party girl going from man to man. Kylie needs to redo Maxie a bit. You can't have the main character that isn't that likable.

The mystery was ok not great like some have said. When a new series gets great reviews right off the bat it does make me wonder how many are from friends, people paid to do a great review or relatives of the author? It has happened before! I will wait to see what she does with the characters in the next installment and decide if I want to give this series another chance. Don't get me wrong, Kylie Logan is a good writer just not this book!

Chili Con Carnage by Kylie Logan 28. Oktober 2013
Von Deb@Debbie's Book Bag - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
Kylie Logan begins a new cozy mystery series with a chili cook-off spin. The first book in the Chili Cook-Off mystery series, Chili Con Carnage introduces readers to the carnival atmosphere of the cook-off circuit, with it's eccentric denizens and eclectic personalities. Logan does a wonderful job with characterization. Bringing readers characters who are easy to identify with, while remaining fresh and interesting. Readers will find this culinary mystery full of just as many hot and spicy moments as the beans in the famous Hot Cha Palace chili!

Kylie Logan is no stranger to the cozy sub-genre. She has three series' to her credit under this pen name and many other books, including the highly popular Pepper Martin series under the name, Casey Daniels. When it comes to mysteries, Logan certainly knows what she's doing. There are so many cozies today that focus on food in some way. That gives an author a real challenge in finding some form of the foodie culture to explore that will be new and refreshing. Logan has hit on an interesting concept with this series.

Cook-offs in general bring in a host of quirky characters, whether it's chili, barbecue or any other type of food. I think Logan is tapping a very entertaining area of food, that is almost reminiscent of the carnival culture. Where cook-off participants travel around to different shows and try to beat each other with the best recipes. Logan introduces readers to a behind the scenes look at what goes into this 'cook-off' mentality and how they make it work. I loved the idea and thought Logan did a great job of pulling it off and making it fun and realistic.

Logan has a knack for characterization and that's really on display with this first in a series book. Logan has to not only introduce readers to the culture and the characters, but she also has to set up the series, create the back story and make these characters come alive for her readers. She does an impressive job with this book. Readers will be immediately drawn to the two half sisters who are forced to co-exist in on the chili cook-off circuit after their father disappears. I think Logan was going for an over-the-top cast of characters who are hot and sassy, and full of surprises.

Maxie Pierce is definitely a firecracker. Chili Con Carnage is told from Maxie's point of view and the reader gets a sense of her hot tempered and passionate attitude right from the first page. I liked this character a lot. She had sass and determination, but she also had a softer side. She has had some trouble in her love life and it once again gets her in trouble in this mystery. I liked her interactions with her over-bearing half sister and the way she looked at life in general. She may not have anyone's first pick for a good amateur sleuth, but she pulls it off with style. Logan does a fantastic job with her and readers will fall in love with her saucy voice and spit fire attitude.

The mystery aspect of the novel was well thought out and planned. Maxie is a sort of no nonsense character and her investigation proves that out. She asks a lot of questions and doesn't beat around the bush. I liked the fact that Logan goes a different direction with this one, but not having a strong police presence. Nick Falcone is a security guard, with a police background, but he isn't bogged down by rule and regulation and I think that helped him come across as a good back up for Maxie as well as a possible love interest. There were several red herring to throw the reader off and the initial suspects may not be who the reader would suspect. Overall a very well written mystery.

I'm looking forward to the next book in the series as much for the family drama as I am for the mystery. These two girls are all in when it comes to chili and love. I liked the idea about the disappearance of Texas Jack and where that theme might take the series. There is a lot going on in this book for readers to enjoy. A great first effort!

Chili Cook-off Craze! 31. Oktober 2013
Von Novel Destination~Used Book Emporium - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
Once again, Casey Daniels/Kylie Logan has come up with a fun read that is hard to ignore when housecleaning and other chores need done. Quirky characters abound in this new series. I like the fact that the author also teaches us a bit about spices, chili, and the fierce competition behind the cook-off events too. You will look at the next cook-off event you attend differently after reading this. All fun and great mystery besides. I'm looking forward to reading the next one!
