There is no doubt that "A Child's History of England" is one of the great history books of all time. Besides the masterful writing of Dickens, there is his choice of subject matter. Quite opinionated, and quite unpatriotic, this history is written from a humanistic point of view rather than analytical or just chronological, which makes it even much more valuable, as Dickens wished to instill a moral sense of history in the reader which would never be acceptable in today's publishing community, where dry analysis and "neutral" viewpoints are de rigeur and uncritical scholasticism reigns supreme. This version is chock full of fascinating and true anecdotes which would never be found in today's histories, and make an interesting reading just spellbinding.
MY problem with the edition offered, is that one does not get the FULL "Child's History of England", but only the first of the original two volumes, and at a whopping 30 bucks as well. This borders on bait and switch and fraud, since the entire second half of the book, from about 1422 to 1689, is not delivered. To my knowledge, that second half is not even offered in hardbound on amazon, which is extremely disappointing. The total price then becomes unbelievably expensive, and perhaps even unavailable. Amazon owes an explanation for this, and none is yet to be had.
As such, I would avoid this hardbound volume of a truly great book.
