Kurzbeschreibung

Abigal Tyler is pleased to present her new picture book for kids. This easy reading book for children contains fun facts about guns throughout history. They’ll learn how the development of guns changed lives in the Old West and in the world of today.

This informational picture book is written for children ages 7 to 12. It contains a variety of information on the use of guns, and their history. It’s illustrated with 18 great graphic images. It offers interesting facts, in simple language. Although the material is appropriate for these ages, younger children should read it with their parents.

Students will encounter new words and concepts. They'll read about the fall of Constantinople in 1453, when it faced the first cannon. They’ll read about how Mark Twain won his only duel with pistols. They’ll also learn about the blunderbuss, and the horseback riders who used them.Other subjects in the book include Jesse James, the bank robber, the Gatling gun in the Civil War, and why General Custer lost his battle with Native Americans.

Most of the book’s images are illustrations and appropriate photographs. These are most effective when read on a Kindle Fire, or the Kindle Application on a tablet device, or PC. They can be viewed clearly on black and white readers. Only the color dimension is lacking.

Children will also find answers to kid-style questions.

- Is a paintball gun a real gun?
- Why do people have guns in their houses?

Teachers and home schooling parents will find this book a strong, fact-based addition to their nonfiction libraries. It does not address politics. It provides selected passages on an assortment of gun-related topics. Science facts, history facts, and cultural facts are all presented for the young reader. Great illustrations bring the text to life.

1.0 von 5 Sternen WTH?! - mystified 10. Februar 2014

The bizarre cover indicates that perhaps this is a joke, however the content inside (I downloaded it for free) doesn't in any way show it to be a joke. The book contains trite chatter about guns on a level that kids could follow, but it doesn't convey any useful information. It's not a safety book. It's not a history book. It's not educational . . . here's an example of the content:

"Guns are used in wars. One kind of gun fires missiles at ships and airplanes. Another kind fires bullets at enemy soldiers.

Guns should always be treated with care. Good gun owners store their weapons safely. They know that guns are powerful. Accidents can happen easily."

2.0 von 5 Sternen Not for my child... 10. Februar 2014

I'm not, nor have I ever been, a gun owner but I downloaded this book in hopes that it would be educational, both with accurate history and to teach gun safety because, as our children age, we never truly know what kind of situation they will encounter when they aren't with their parents. This is not a book that my 8 year old will be reading and below are the reasons why:

As for the educational value of this book, that's the second star. It does give a partial history of certain guns. It is clear and on a level that children will understand. I personally found the book to clearly pro-gun. One part reads, "Handguns made a terrifying sound. Bullets flew and people fell down, dead. It was like magic." Another, speaking of General Custer, "If Custer had said yes [to guns], he would have won." Really? Are these the little seeds that we want to put into the minds of 7-12 year olds when most school shootings are perpetrated by kids not much older than 12? That's certainly not a seed I want placed in my child's head. As insignificant as it may seem to some, the tiniest little things do matter when speaking of those with very impressionable minds.

The book should have spent much more time talking about gun safety and the really bad things that can happen with guns and how children can deal with different situations that they may encounter in life should they be in a position to be around a gun.

Instead, the book spent far too much time glorifying guns and talking about "bad guys." There were just too many things that didn't sit well with me in this book.
