Near the end of the 20th century, for reasons beyond the grasp of modern science, human sperm count went to zero. The last birth occurred in 1995, and in the space of a generation humanity has lost its future. In England, under the rule of an increasingly despotic Warden, the infirm are encouraged to commit group suicide, criminals are exiled and abandoned and immigrants are subjected to semi-legalized slavery. Divorced, middle-aged Oxford history professor Theo Faron, an emotionally constrained man of means and intelligence who is the Warden's cousin, plods through an ordered, bleak existence. But a chance involvement with a group of dissidents moves him onto unexpected paths, leading him, in the novel's compelling second half, toward risk, commitment and the joys and anguish of love. In this convincingly detailed world--where kittens are (illegally) christened, sex has lost its allure and the arts have been abandoned--James concretely explores an unthinkable prospect. Well, the first page was good...,

Yes, the first page was good. It was crisp with a fresh idea. In fact, I remember the physical page being quite light when I turned it, though at the time I didn't realize how unique this experience would be. The rest of the pages were weighed down in the armor of needless, roll-your-eyes descriptions of minute articles to the left or to the right or above or below (this is a simulation) of the actual plot. Oh yes, the plot. I found myself scratching my head more than once thinking "Now, would ANYONE ever do that?" I found the characters cold and unbelievable. I found the constant departures from the original idea irritating. I was very disappointed with this book (I can't believe I got through it).But the first page was good. This was a real slog to get through. The idea was good enough, but the plot was snail's pace - every scene is described in detail, just a drive up the road takes three pages as we get a detailed description of each tree. For me, none of these descriptions added anything. Many analagies are used - the starlit sky was like a black cloth with pinholes and a bright light behind. I know what a starlit night is like, y'know? In 'Money' Martin Amis says ' the drinks were lined up behind the bar like the manhattan skyline'. Now that's an analgy that adds something. Or Will Self 'as the talk turned to mutual, though absent, friends their stock rose and fell on the Nikkie index of conversation'. That's what I'm talking about!

A good book if you like to be aware of an author using lots of uncommon words when an ordinary one will do. Good for vocabulary expansion. Story - Ha ha! Don't bother! At one point the book had me turning pages fast and reading with real interest, but that was it! The edition I read had a review on the back "A most tender love story" Where? Characters did not come over well especially towards the end of the book. It did seem good at the beginning as far as the ideas of a story go, but it feels as though the author is fast running out of both ideas and interest by the end. I only read this book because I was bored and there was nothing else to do. That's the only time I would recommend you to pick it up. If your interested, go and get a copy from the library, but save your hard-earned for something else!
