Kurzbeschreibung

The compelling thriller that launched the career of best-selling novelist Stuart Woods in an anniversary hardcover edition.

In the bitter winter of 1920, the first body is found in Delano, Georgia; the naked corpse of an unidentified teenager. There is no direct evidence of murder, but the body bears marks of what seems to be a ritual beating. The investigation falls to Will Henry Lee, a failed cotton farmer newly appointed as Delano's first chief of police. Lee's obsession with the crime begins a story that weaves through the decades, following the life of a small southern town and the role of three police chiefs in unraveling the crime. Chiefs is the best kind of thriller, where the investigation plays out against the drama beneath the surface of a seemingly placid community, seething with the pressures of race, love, hate, and; always; political power, extending from the town fathers all the way to Washington, DC. With a new foreword by the author, this volume will be a collector's treasure for all fans of Stuart Woods.

Synopsis

When a teenaged boy is found dead, the chief of police in a small Georgia town in 1920 begins an obsessive hunt for the boy's tormentor, which leads him to two former chiefs of police, one a murderer and the other the concealer of a secret.

5.0 von 5 Sternen absolutely his best 17. Januar 2001
Von Ein Kunde
Format:Taschenbuch
I have to agree with all the other critics: This was the first book of Stuart Woods and absolutely his best. I loved it and read it almost without stopping. Very suspenseful, very thorough recherched, very well done. As a German, I especialled like the scenes describing the life of the black citizens spanning from 1919 to 1963. I learned a lot of the day-to-day life of average black and white people by reading this book. Very recommandable.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A great southern novel 11. September 1999
Von Ein Kunde
Format:Taschenbuch
The characters in Chiefs are without a doubt some of the most interesting and well-developed characters that have ever surfaced in any novel to date. Woods does a great job creating such a diverse group of people all the while keeping them realistic and life-like. He paints a very accurate picture of what the south was like in the early 1900's and the 1950's. Since he created such life-like and believable people, I found myself either hating or loving the characters. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading. The three Chiefs that are the focal point are all very different, and they all have amazing qualities that make them come alive. Aside from holding the same position at one time or another, they also were committed to solving one of the worst series of crimes the south had ever seen.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Well Done! 18. April 2000
Format:Taschenbuch
While I have not seen it mentioned here, I think it is important to note this book won a Edgar Award in 1982. After having read the book I can see why it did as well as the high comments provided by others here. A few additional comments follow.
I often find books spanning several generations such as this one to be very entertaining. The development of the characters as well as the community in which they were set was particularly well done. A few of the characters along with the common theme that spanned the length of the book gave additional depth to the story. After reading the last line in the book I came away with the feeling, "Well done"!

5.0 von 5 Sternen It's so damn good! 24. August 1999
Von Ein Kunde
Format:Taschenbuch
I got Chiefs after reading all the Amazon 5-star reader reviews. Usually, I'd walk on by a book about small town Georgia cops, never imagining it could be this enthralling. The author is masterful at drawing the reader into this little world; I found myself talking out loud to the characters. He doesn't rely on the graphic gore and language of the typical modern shock thriller, hence making the terror more real. What makes the southern authors so good!? This belongs with "Gone With the Wind" and "The Prince of Tides." As a serial killer story, it belongs with the best of Lawrence Sanders.

5.0 von 5 Sternen More Depth from Woods 18. August 1999
Von Ein Kunde
Format:Taschenbuch
Stuart Woods hit a home run with this book. Much deeper than his stock Stone Barrington series (which is pretty good, for what it is). Woods does an excellent job of following the lives of three Chiefs of Police over the first 45 years a small Georgia town's existence.
His characters, dialogue, culture, etc. from 1919 forward are very believable and offer something more to the reader than just a 'mystery.'
I haven't read Woods latest book yet, but I intend to soon. I just hope it has the richness and body of "Chiefs."

5.0 von 5 Sternen I could not rest until I had finished this book! 13. September 1999

I had seen the tv mini-series several years ago and liked it very much. When I started reading Chiefs, parts of it came back to me (the mini-series was extremely similar) but I was still held in suspense. Once in a while a book comes along that I can't stop thinking about even when I'm not free to read--I can't wait to get back to it. This is one of those books. There are several characters and plots all leading into one major plot; yet, it never gets confusing or boring. This is one of the best books I have read in a long time.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Without a doubt one of the best police novels ever 11. Dezember 2004
Format:Taschenbuch
"Chiefs" is set in the fictional small town of Delano, Georgia, and tells the captivating story of the lives of three separate police chiefs who are trying to unravel the mystery of a pattern of murders spanning decades. The crime story in itself is very good, but what makes this book an outstanding read is the ample local color, complete with political intrigue and overt racial conflict, that perfectly documents the thorny path from segregation to integration in America's south.

5.0 von 5 Sternen The video is out there 19. Januar 2000
Von Ein Kunde
Format:Taschenbuch
I've read this book many times, spurred by the release of the mini-series, which was also excellent. I could swear that I watched this video several years ago (as a rental from a video store)....it must be out there somewhere, right? If anyone should be able to get it, Amazon should.
I would highly recommend this novel as one of Wood's best (and earliest)...while his later books are good, this one is exceptional. Like John Sanford, he knows that above all, story is everything.
