The Windy City isn't quite ready for Phoebe Somerville—the outrageous, curvaceous New York knockout who has just inherited the Chicago Stars football team. And Phoebe is definitely not ready for the Stars' head coach, former gridiron legend Dan Calebow, a sexist jock taskmaster with a one-track mind. Calebow is everything Phoebe abhors. And the sexy new boss is everything Dan despises—a meddling bimbo who doesn't know a pigskin from a pitcher's mound.

So why is Dan drawn to the shameless sexpot like a heat-seeking missile? And why does the coach's good ol' boy charm leave cosmopolitan Phoebe feeling awkward, tongue-tied...and ready to fight?

The sexy, heartwarming, and hilarious "prequel" to This Heart of Mine—Susan Elizabeth Phillips's New York Times bestselling blockbuster—It Had To Be You is an enchanting story of two stubborn people who believe in playing for keeps.

Inheriting the Chicago Stars football team, trendy New Yorker Phoebe Somerville knocks heads with Coach Dan Calebow, who resents her meddling as much as she despises his sexist jocularity, until they discover an unlikely attraction for each other. Reissue.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Excellent!!! Funny and oh sooo cute!!! 3. September 1999
Von Ein Kunde
After having read "Heaven, Texas", I just had to go for SEP's previous book. And let me put it this way: I JUST LOVED IT!!!!! This story is both so breath-takingly funny and heartwarmingly romantic. Whow!!! I must admit I'm not much of a football lover, but this book, as well as Heaven, Texas, got me really interested in this sport somehow. (Maybe because of those cute players and coaches???) *g* I liked this particular book from the very beginning because I didn't know whom I should feel sorrier for - poor Phoebe, who had inherited the Chicago Stars football team including their tough and hard-to-handle coach, or Dan, who found himself faced with a (what he thought)birdbrained, high society sexpot who didn't know a damn thing about football and a poor excuse of a dog, called Pooh. You know right from the beginning that this could only lead to total catastrophe - and, well, you won't be disappointed. Be ready for the best time of your life when reading this marvellous book - and look forward to the very last setence! (Though you'll wish afterwards that this weren't the end...) 5.0 von 5 Sternen My favorite SEP 1. Mai 2000

My favorite book by Susan, until I read Lady Be Good. Phoebe Somerville is a blond bimbo with a sweet heart and brains, but of course, no one notices because of her more, uh, prominent attributes. At the death of her evil father, she inherits the Chicago Stars football team, much to the ire of Coach Dan Calebow, who sees his team on the verge of disaster because of the new bimbo in town. They fight, they insult each other, and they're smoldering! If you love football like I do, then this is an added bonus, but you don't have to be a fan to enjoy this wonderful book.

This was the first book by Ms. Phillips that I had ever read. Since then, there is only one -Hot shot- that I have not loved. This book is so lovable! Phoebe Sommerville is such a great character! Strong yet vulnerable, she is the kind of heroine that stays with you. And Dan Calebow is simply gorgeous in so many ways. The plot ans subplots are interesting and complex, and most of the characters grow and develop through the book just like people do. The pace of the book is fast and the dialogues are natural and funny. The love scenes are sensual and hot, and so real -these are people not cardboard cutouts-. I've found out that you just can't put this book down, even when you are reading it for the umpetenth time!

4.0 von 5 Sternen A bimbo heroine? A football hero? Still, Ioved it! 29. April 2000
This is the one about the gorgeous and outrageous heroine who inherits a football team from her less than loving deceased dad & butts heads & falls in love with the teams bullheaded jock Head Coach. Now, I hate football (and most sports), so I had doubts about liking this book. Well, the first chapter had me in stiches & she continued the pace throughout the book. When I began the book I thought, "Oh, no, the heroine is a major bimbo" but I soon learned she was so much more than she appears. She has to overcome a tragedy from her past that has haunted her her entire life. I am still amazed (a week later) at how Ms. Phillips handled two serious issues and still manage to create a laugh out loud book.
The hero is a wonderfully arrogant, funny, and sexy guy who's looking for "a baby making, bread baking, good loving woman" (not exact quote but close) to settle down with but gets Phoebe instead. I loved this book! It made me cry and laugh and I actually didn't mind learning something about football!
For all you animal lovers: There's also a doggy named Pooh (poodle) who gets into all kinds of trouble in Chapter One. I also hate poodles but again Ms. Phillips managed to make me like this one (g).

5.0 von 5 Sternen Susan Elizabeth Phillips at her best! 27. September 1998
This book is the one of the best ones I have read from her. The story line revolves around Phoebe Somerville inheriting a losing football team. The main characters in the book, Phoebe and Dan Calebrow were two people searching for the same thing -- LOVE. They were each attracted to one another on first sight. Both were rejected by their parents during their childhoods. Dan having been abused by his father and unloved by his mother. Phoebe, on the other hand, had grown up knowing that her father never really accepted her and didn't love her either. Her mother had died when Phoebe was young so she never really knew a mother's love. Along with the football team Phoebe also inherits 15 yr. old Molly, her half sister. Molly/Phoebe didn't get along but learned to love one another as the story progressed. I felt the story line was great and kept my attention all the way to the last page. I wished the story didn't end. The epilogue was the best...I found myself laughing, crying, sighing, smiling! I wish the world had more books like this!

5.0 von 5 Sternen My favourite SEP 10. September 2000
Von Ein Kunde
I don't quite know how she does it, but it sure works. I actually have quite some things i'd say i don't like about the book. The main characters? pure stereotypes (blonde bimbo/sexy,rich,macho athlete); the end scene? rather foreseeable, and again, stereotypical in that the author sees the need for a dangerous situation and thus an outside influence to make the characters get their act together. At least SEP's habit to set different standards for acceptable behaviour in her male/female protagonists is less pronounced in this book than it is in some others - at least phoebe isn't a complete virgin, and there is a convincing - if stereotypical - reason for that. Is there any reason why SEP usually likes her men experienced and her women virginal? (in that aspect, Heaven, Texas and Lady be good really alienated me). All that aside, I find myself returning to this book and re-reading it time and again. I just fell in love with phoebe and dan. They came to life from the very first page. And, definitely, I have yet to find another author with the same talent to create such steamy sexual tension between the main characters.
