Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame Bop drummer, composer, lyricist, and vocalist Artt Frank is one of the few authentic bop musicians on the scene today. He is best known for his friendship and professional association with trumpet immortal, Chet Baker, with whom he worked for many years.

Michael Armando, jazz musician and President of MJA Records, says of Chet Baker: The Missing Years: A Memoir by Artt Frank, “Artt tells it like it was, what it was like being a friend and a drummer for this great legend Chet Baker … When reading this book for the first time it is almost like you are being drawn into a time warp going back into time. Artt Frank takes you from the dark back alleys of drugs and despair to the shinning genius of Chet's playing smoke filled clubs and the streets … If you are a musician you will cherish it after reading it. Non-musicians will learn how great Chet Baker was and how great a friend drumming great Artt Frank was to Chet. The truth will set you free and Artt Frank has done this with his memoir. Amen... I give this book 10 stars...”

As reviewed by premiere jazz journalist and critic, Doug Ramsey, this memoir “…shows us sides of the great trumpeter that few people knew. In gripping detail, he [Artt] tells of the well-known drama in Baker’s life—the sudden fame, the struggle with drugs, the effects of a beating that almost ended his career. But Artt gives us new insights into Chet’s warmth, his love of family, his steely determination and the early emergence of his astonishing talent…This is a book of revelations."

5.0 von 5 Sternen The Missing Years 8. März 2014
Von Mike Harris - Veröffentlicht auf
As a professional jazz musician and great fan of Chet Baker I was curious to learn more about his life. Arttt Frank's memoir is an intimate window into Chet's personal life just after he was mugged and had to rebuild himself physically and emotionally in the late 60"s.
Artt was instrumental in helping him set up a come back gig and securing a record deal.
As they build trust as friends we peer into Chet's incredible genius and courage to fight throught the pain of rebuilding his chops and career in a time when the popularity of rock and roll had eclipsed jazz in America. We also see Chet as a family man and how his drug addiction made his life that much more complex. As a musician I particularly enjoyed how Artt describes Chet's abilities in musician terms when they play together and he begins to rebuild his sound. I was transported into the room hearing Chet improvise while being accompanied be Artt's brushes.
I really feel I know Chet baker know on a personal level and I have Artt Frank to thank for it. This a great tribute to real genius from a man that was a band mate, blood brother and true life line when Chet needed it most.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Love It! 25. März 2014

For someone who has tried to master the trumpet in his own way, I gravitated to Chet Baker's music through an almost magnetic attraction. I was somewhat dismayed by all the negative energy about him online which seemed to contradict what I heard in his music: A soul of profound power and beauty through his art making a real statement about life through his unique sound and phrasing. When I bumped into Artt Frank online I was happy to see he offered another side of the famous trumpeter by someone who knew him personally and well. Artt was also very generous with his time with me on the phone and during visits to his Arizona home. So I had an awful lot of Artt's perspective on Chet before the book. But even with that I was blown away by the wonderful detail of this book. Even though it is a memoir it is at the same time a gripping narrative about a vital time in Chet's life. It had me on the edge of my seat. And as a trumpet player I can appreciate Artt relating elements of Chet's playing such as his breathing practices. And how Artt analyzes what made Chet so different stylistically from other trumpet us all tips on embrouchure and phrasing. I love the section where Chet describes to Artt how he approaches improvisation.. So if you have ever wanted to try to put your soul through a musical instrument like Chet did, Artt's book is a must!

5.0 von 5 Sternen Great Story! 20. März 2014

I was very curious to find out how this book was going to portray Chet Baker. I half expected it to be an unrealistic 180 degree turnaround from the other books. The books that had portrayed Chet in such a negative light and never talked about the good inside the man. In fact this book didn't sugarcoat any of the demons Chet Baker faced, they were talked about in detail but it was honest, fair, and obviously told by someone who knew Chet as a friend. I found it very interesting to read about the daily struggles that the former number one trumpet player in the world faced as an unemployed "has been".
This story was as much about real friendship as it was about Chet himself. I couldn't help but feel uplifted after reading this and thought how fortunate Chet was to have someone other than his family who really cared about him. A great read and I look forward to the sequel!

5.0 von 5 Sternen A beautiful insight into what it takes to be a jazz musician 11. März 2014
Von Beth Ohse - Veröffentlicht auf
I found Artt Frank’s book to be a genuinely exciting page turner. When I read this book, I could relate to these musicians’ struggles and actually feel the compassion and love that Artt felt for Chet. Artt was brought into Chet’s life at the perfect time, because without Artt’s patience and kindness toward his musical idol, we don’t know if Chet would’ve survived at all. Since Artt cares so much for Chet, the reader starts to love and care for Chet too. Artt writes like he plays drums; he is very sensitive and more than willing to do all he can to help his fellow musicians succeed. Artt gives the reader insights into the music business and addiction that will leave you with an empathy for artists, musicians, and addicts that you never had before. Beth Ohse

5.0 von 5 Sternen Great Read... 7. Mai 2014
Von Max Linden - Veröffentlicht auf
You know from the first chapter, this is a no-bullsh*t account of Chet Baker's remarkable comeback. I was moved by Frank's unselfishness and devotion to his best friend and almost broken music icon. Frank's stubborn nature wouldn't let Chet Baker go out like a has been. This is a book for anyone who wants to learn about an important part of music history. Everyone should be lucky enough to have a friend like Artt Frank.
