Produktbeschreibungen

Amazon.com

It was inevitable, thank goodness, that the Dummies series would give us an introductory chess book. The light touch is perfect to offset the sober aura of mystery that surrounds the game in many people's minds. And the extras that reach beyond the well-written move explanations, strategies, and pattern-recognition make the book a real winner. It won't take much playing for readers to appreciate the section on chess etiquette, for example, or the one on uncommon moves, subtitled, "The Ones That Start the Fights." Informative tips and amusing bits of trivia add to the fun.

Kurzbeschreibung

Many consider chess to be the best game ever invented. Chess imposes a set of rules and has finite limits, but just as you start to think you're finally solving its mysteries, chess thwarts you. Sometimes, therefore, the game is frustrating, but far more often, chess proves both surprising and delightful. The deeper you get into chess, the more of its secrets you unearth but the game has never been tapped out. Even today's monster computers are far from playing the theorized "perfect" chess game. Chess For Dummies is for anyone who wants to become a better chess player. Whether you've been playing chess for years or never played at all, this clearly written and easy-to-understand guide will help you to * Apply the rules of chess to maximize winning * Understand the lingo involved in the game * Find other players who are just about at your own level * Teach others how to play the game Explore move-by-move what it takes for you to be the one proudly saying, "Checkmate" at the end of your chess game. Chess For Dummies also covers the following topics and more: * Setting up the board * The pieces and their powers * Pattern recognition * What to do throughout the game, from start to end * Whom to play, when, where, and how * Online and computer chess * Chess notation Ever since chess originated in the 17th century in ancient India, it has grown to become recognized as the most ancient, intellectual, and cultural game of its time. Its combination of sport, scientific thinking, and the elements of art make it one of the most played games in the world. This book shows you everything you need to know in order to unearth the secrets and philosophies of chess.

If you're just learning how to play chess, and you want to get better, this book will definitely make you a better player as it teaches you the tactics you need to know, but don't expect to improve so much that you'll be winning against intermediate players. I've improved since reading Chess for Dummies -- I can easily trounce beginners or bad players -- but I can't win against intermediate players. For that to happen, I'll need to practice a lot more and read more advanced books.

I doubt that one will be able to play decent chess after studying this book. One will know quite a few things about the history, the most beautiful chess games, the world champions, the most famous players who never became world champions etc. One will also know some openings by sight and some basic tactical moves.

If you are aiming to educatedly talk about chess with unambitious players, this book could be for you. If you want to learn how to play chess, it can only be a very first step.

An excellent book! 2. Januar 2003

This book is excellent. For a beginning player of chess, this is great stuff if you are seriously interested in making the huge leap to an intermediate level of play in the world of chess. As with all "For Dummies" books, the book does a wonderful job of delivering serious presentations in a lighthearted, crystal clear manner. I'm still only half-finished, and already I've jumped two levels in beating my computer chess game!

Good reference, tries to do a lot in a little space
What I like about this book is that it actually explains exactly what's going on in plain English. It assumes that you know absolutely nothing about the game and doesn't attempt... Lesen Sie weiter...

A Well Written Book With Limited Information On Chess
I had not picked up a chess piece for more than ten (10) years so I was looking forward to reading this book as a "refresher course" in chess. I WAS VERY DISAPPOINTED. Lesen Sie weiter...

Very, very good.
James Eade has made a very good book. Most of the other reviews say a good book for beginners, but it is good for much higher levels than that. Lesen Sie weiter...

A superb book for both the beginning and intermediate player. One of the few chess books on the market that is actually enjoyable to read.
Highly recommended.
