Synopsis

In this book, Fidel Castro writes with candour and affection about his legendary partner. Castro's personal recollections of Che Guevara paint an intense, affectionate portrait of the greatest revolutionary the world has ever known. Fidel Castro has remarked: "For me, it has been hard to accept the idea that Che is dead. I've dreamed of him often, that I spoke with him, that he was alive..." Now, through the words of the surviving half of the legendary partnership that brought the Latin American dream of a people's revolution so vividly to life, Che lives again. Castro draws a vivid, breathing picture of the whole Che - friend, revolutionary, artist, thinker and man - in a fond reminiscence that records the personal side of a historic partnership. A unique first-hand document of perhaps the most important political union of the 20th Century, "Che: A Memoir By Fidel Castro" offers readers the opportunity to gain a human view of an association that has become mythologised to the point of impenetrability.

Including a detailed account of Castro's last days with Che in Cuba, a remarkably frank assessment of the Bolivian mission, and a transcript of Fidel's speech given on the return of Che's remains in 1997, this is a chance to cut through the legend and rediscover the living core of the greatest radical story ever told. It also contains several previously unpublished photographs, both of Che Guevara and Fidel Castro.

Der Verlag über das Buch

Fidel Castro writes on Che Guevara
For the first time, Fidel Castro writes with candor and affection of his relationship with Ernesto Che Guevara, documenting the Argentinian-born doctor's extraordinary bond with Cuba from the revolution's early days to Che's final guerrilla expeditions to Africa and Bolivia. Castro vividly portrays Che, the man, the revolutionary and the thinker, and describes in detail his last days with Che in Cuba, giving a remarkably frank assessment of the Bolivian mission. Illuminated by many newly published photos - including the first and last of Guevara and Castro together - this is a revealing portrait not just of its subject but of its author as well -- Dieser Text bezieht sich auf eine vergriffene oder nicht verfügbare Ausgabe dieses Titels.

Fidel Castro has given a book that enables us at last, to adress the questions some people are insistently, even obsessively asking about Che Guevara. Who was he? What was his character? What was his political philosophy? I thought he was a Cubans but he was not. Ernesto Guevara was born in Argentina. He was already becoming involved in political activity during and immediately after his study at medical school in Buenos Aires. He dedicated all his life to revolution.

He played a decisive role in the military defeat of Batista in Cuba. After Batista fled, became Che ( the Cubans hicknamed him "Che" an Argentina term of greeting ) a key leader of the new revolutionary government. He was also a central leader of the political organization that became the Communist Party of Cuba. Apart from these responsibilities Che Guevara often represented the Cuban revolutionary government around the world. As had been his intention since joining the Cuban revolutionary movement Che was supposed to initiate a creation of "two, three, many Vietnams" to brake American power.

Che left Cuba in April 1965, initially to lead a Cuban-organized guerrilla mission to support the revolutionary struggle in the Congo. Six month later he supposed to prepare another Cuban-organized guerrilla force for Bolivia, where he was wounded and captured by US-trained and run Bolivian counterinsurgency troop on October 8, 1967. The following day he was killed and his body was hidden... Che Guevara's mortal remains were discovered in 1997 and returned to Cuba.

Che was one of the most charismatic personality but he was one of those people who had no personal ambitions. There was nothing else, he only wanted to do his duty. He lived for the revolution, he died for the revolution. Today one would say, Che was assigned to lead terrorism. In my opinion he was a fanatic...

The world has been shaken by the force of concussion at the events o 1968 as all over the world cities were overwhelmed by student radicals who battled police and took to the streets demanding not only an end to American's war in Vietnam but insisting on unprecedented recognition of student power ( exemplary: in Germany the beginning of RAF ). Their Ideal and hero was nobody else but Che Guevara, who remained the most admired personality of the last century...

I do not agree with the dictatorship of Fidel Castro at all, but his memoir of Ernesto Che Guevara has been written informative and fine detailed. That's why I put in five award points.

Not what it may seem 18. September 2001

Yes, Old Fidel did write this. No, he didn't sit down at his word processor and bash it out over a quiet weekend. It is a collection of Fidel's speeches, writings and interviews about Che. Some of them are very interesting. Some of them go on and on and on. This bloke can talk! It is hardly an intimate portrait, it doesn't reveal anything new, but it is still a worthwhile read - if only to highlight the relationship between Che and Fidel and the circumstances surrounding Che's disappearance from Cuba.

A classic political memoir and biography of revolutionary and intellectual Che Guevara 6. August 2006
Von Midwest Book Review - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
Now in a new edition which includes Fidel Castro's speech on the return of Che's remains to Cuba 30 years after his assassination in Bolivia in 1967, Che: A Memoir By Fidel Castro is a classic political memoir and biography of revolutionary and intellectual Che Guevara. Che: A Memoir By Fidel Castro is not structured like a standard biography; chapters jump back and forth through time, reflecting on key events in Che's political life, his implacable struggle for transformation, his martyrdom, and his legacy. An inset section of black-and-white photographic plates round out this unique appraisal of a complex revolutionary figure (whose impact continues to inspire men and woman to political resistance and activism long after his own death), as seen through the eyes of a national leader who admires him. Students of Che's live and work would be well advised to visit the Ocean Press website for a complete listing of all their Che Guevara related titles.

An intense and interesting look into Cuba's political sphere and also at Castro himself. Che Guevara is brought down from myth status and shown in a very human light. If only Che was still around...I know he would've solved that whole Elian Gonzalez episode...
