A brief, rhythmic text printed in different styles and varied with playful onomatopoeia recalls the humor and cadences of a great jazz musician: ``...Charlie Parker played saxophone./The music sounded like be bop./Never leave your cat alone./Be bop./Fisk, fisk./Lollipop./Boomba, boomba./Bus stop./Zznnzznn./Boppity, bibbitty, bop. BANG!'' The equally evocative art is rendered in rough charcoal with watercolors added. Like Polacco, Raschka uses a vigorous line and angular perspectives to give his figures extraordinary energy; creating jaunty, fantastical creatures to move with the beat, he draws on Parker's nickname (``Bird'') and words from his songs (e.g., ``lollipop'' and ``bus stop'' above). Excellent 6. April 1999

I am a licensed preschool music teacher. I found "Charlie Parker...." and was immediately thrilled with it. I took it and read it to my preschool music classes, ages 3-5. The first time they heard it, they liked it but clearly were a little puzzled, I think because the book was outside their normal reading references. By the second or third time they heard it, they were tapping their feet and spontaneously moving to the jazz rhythms of the book. I'm on the fourth or fifth class reading of the book, and they dig it more every time! My sincere appreciation to Chris Raschka for creating such a wonderful experience in jazz for children (and grownups). I'm eagerly looking forward to "Mysterious Thelonious!"

Makes me want to dance! 4. Februar 1999

I have read this book over and over and over. I regularly buy it for neices and nephews and make sure each has their own copy. I have read it to my 4th graders for the past few years and they love it. It is a great read-aloud. The words flow. The book is hipnotic. Charlie Parker needs to be introduced to children and this is a great way to go about it.

My 6 year old neice can quote each page! She's been able to do that since she was 3 or 4! Her little brother now has a copy! Chris Raschka has done a great job with this book. Oh, and, never leave your cat a-lone.....

A WAY DIFFERENT EXPERIENCE EVERY TIME YOU READ IT!!! 4. Dezember 1998

This is a marvelous book for introducing children to the concept of jazz improvisation. My son is 3 and after reading along in the book several times has begun doing his own riffs on the text.

We haven't read the book the same way twice, and all of us in our house put it in the "to read" pile night after night. This one is impossible to become tired of, and it's a stellar tribute to a great man.
