Most of the information is detailed and accurate (although people may struggle to survive on 25 US dollars a day in Uruguay). The book will not be of much use to seasoned travellers or to people who are actually on the ground, but it does provide useful pointers to those who want to go to Latin America but do not know where to start. Once it has been digested, the South American Handbook or the Mexico & Central America Handbook--the best overall guides to the continent--should be the next ports of call. --Toby Green

Read this first: Central & South America war für mich der erste guide aus der lonely planet reihe und diente mir als einführende Literatur für eine 4monatige Reise durch dieses faszinierende Gebiet. Wer sich einen allgemeinen Eindruck von den Ländern Mittel- und Süamerikas verschaffen möchte, ist mit diesem Heft sehr gut versorgt. Auf zwar knappen, häufig jedoch ausreichenden sechs bis zehn Seiten werden Informationen wie Kosten, Transportmittel und Unterkunftstandards geliefert. Das ganze wird durch farbige, mit empfohlenen Routen gekennzeichnete Karten ergänzt. Sehr gelungen sind auch die ausführlichen allgemeinen Hinweise über das Reisen in Lateinmerika. Natürlich kann ein so stark komprimierter guide nur als Einführungsliteratur verstanden werden und ersetzt nicht die großen Reiseführer wie das footprint South America Handbook oder den lonely planet south america guide. Alles in allem ein kompakter Reiseführer, der für den Lateinamerika-Neuling ein sehr zu empfehlendes Werk ist.

This book is designed for a first time traveller -- over half of it was advice about weather, shots, and traveller's checks. Detail about where to go and what to see is disappointing -- it only gives a very general outline about it country (they seem to all have jungles, mountains, and ruins) and then recommends other guide books. If you are only buying 1-2 guide books, just buy the other ones.

complete waste of time and money. wish id looked at the content in more detail before buying. i actually went through in disbelief at the scarcity of contents, compared with my other guide books and realised its exactly the same information which gets condensed into the front of other guide books.
lots of common sense information, only of use to someone who really wouldnt even know the first thing about travelling. this was the least useful resource in planning a trip to latin amrica, to the degree theres actually a lot of bad advice.

This is Lonely Planet Lite, all of it material cribbed and repackaged from other Lonely Planet guides on the region, and in many cases the summaries grossly distort what appears in the individual country guides. It's like drinking non-alcoholic beer--so diluted that there's no satisfaction in it--and some of the original wasn't all that great to start with.
