In The Casebook, you can read the final twelve stories that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote about his brilliant detective. They are perhaps the most unusual and the darkest that he penned. Treachery, mutilation and the terrible consequences of infidelity are just some of the themes explored in these stories, along with atmospheric touches of the gothic, involving a bloodsucking vampire, crypts at midnight and strange bones in a furnace. The collection His Last Bow features some of Sherlock Holmes' most dramatic cases, including the vicious revenge intrigue connected with 'The Red Circle' and the insidious murders in 'The Devil's Foot'. The title story recounts how Sherlock Holmes is brought out of retirement to help the government foil a German plot on the eve of the First World War. These two fascinating sets of stories make a glorious farewell to the greatest detective of them all and his erstwhile companion, Dr Watson.

As a reviewer below noted, these aren't the most famous stories in the world of Holmes, but they are still great. I've read all 60 Holmes stories, and there is not a dull one. Besides, you're in for a few surprises in this one. For one, there are stories told through the viewpoint of Holmes himself! True, it doesn't quite hold the same magic as does Watson's narrative, but it is an interesting novelty for Holmes fans (there are only three Holmes stories not told through the viewpoint of Watson: two by Holmes, and one in third person). Also, these were the last Holmes books ever published! Instead of killing him off as he did before, Doyle simply writes a preface to the stories in which he says, among other things, "so say goodbye to Mr. Sherlock Holmes!". Which we did, much to the literature buying public's chagrin.

This collection, the final in the Sherlock Holmes series, is often thought of as being inferior to the others in the series. This is not so. It's true that the mysteries themselves are not quite as diabolically clever as the best of Holmes, but by any other standard they are outstanding. In addition, the stories are marked by a more realistic and darker psychological portrayal of the villains. Doyle's writing is as good in these stories as anywhere else. These stories contain some of the wittiest repartee by Holmes and Watson, with Holmes at his most sarcastic. As an added bonus, the collection contains the only two stories narrated by Holmes himself (and he turns out to be a very good writer!) This book is a must for mystery fans and general readers alike. Don't make the mistake of thinking that because these stories are "classics," they are going to be stodgy reading, or that you have to be a Holmes fan to enjoy them. "The Case Book" is still one of the most entertaining books ever written. Perfect for airplane or beach!

I am 10 years old and have read many books and this is one of my favorites. The Hound of the Baskervilles is my favorite story. Please encourage anyone to read this case book of Sherlock Holmes. I'm sure everyone will enjoy a cunning Sherlock Holmes and a humorous Dr. Watson.
