Case Histories continues a winning streak for Kate Atkinson which began when her impressive novel Behind the Scenes at the Museum won the Whitbread First Novel Award. Since that book, Atkinson has gleaned a keen following of readers who are prepared to follow in the surprising directions the unpredictable author takes us on. And Atkinson--so far--hasn’t let us down.

The perfectly judged prose that distinguished Human Croquet is fully in evidence in Case Histories, and a new frisson here comes from the genre-stretching that Atkinson is indulging in. In some ways, this book could almost be seen as a new take on the crime novel (not the first genre one would expect the author to tackle), but the crime elements here Atkinson uses are peripheral. The protagonist here is a former police inspector who now makes a living as a private investigator. Jackson Brodie is making ends meet in a sweaty Cambridge summer and trying to deal with his own failed marriage. But if his life is adrift, perhaps Brodie can justify his existence via his belief that he can do some good for the people he encounters in his job. But he is to find that he will be irrevocably changed by those he is trying to help.

As a vividly created cast of characters surround the beleaguered Brodie, all the novelistic skills that shone in Atkinson's earlier books are fully in play. Artfully exploiting the conventions of the detective novel while also sending them up, Atkinson gives us Jackson Brodie, the world's most empathic private eye, who seemingly channels his clients' grief while attempting to provide closure. Addicted to the plaintive songs of female country-and-western singers and heartsick over the breakup of his marriage and his separation from his daughter, Jackson becomes friend and confidant to the people who seek his aid. One of his cases involves the florid, bickering Land sisters, who, after cleaning out their father's house upon his death, are stunned to find the bedraggled blue bunny that was their sister's most prized possession before she went missing 30 years ago. Another case concerns lonely, obese Theo, who, out of concern for his daughter's safety, insisted that she work in his law office rather than as a bartender, only to find that he put her directly in harm's way. As Jackson methodically tracks down decades-old clues, Atkinson employs omniscient narration to step in and out of crime scenes both past and present. Playful humor, an impressive technique, and an offbeat detective with a penchant for weeping are the most obvious pleasures of a page-turner that succeeds in being both brainy and thoroughly entertaining. Mit Case Histories ist Kate Atkinson endgültig zu eine meiner Lieblingsautoren geworden: 3 Erzählstränge, die sich im Laufe des Buches Stück für Stück zusammenfinden. Alle 3 spannend und interessant und - wie man es von der Autorin gewohnt ist - toll geschrieben. Ein Roman, der von der ersten Seite an fesselt, mit einer Hauptfigur, die frau einfach lieben muss.

Ich habe das Buch in meinem Urlaub gelesen und so nur einen einzigen Tag gebraucht - ích konnte es einfach nicht aus der Hand legen! Unbedingt empfehlenswert für Fans von Krimis, komplexen Geschichten, interessanten männlichen Hauptfiguren, gut geschriebenen Familiendramen... einfach für so ziemlich alle, die gerne gute Bücher lesen. Ein wirklich ganz, ganz toller Roman von einer großartigen Autorin.

Shot through with wry humour, this is a highly original, literary but accessible take on the modern detective story, noteworthy both for the quality of the writing and for the innovative structure. I would agree with those other reviewers who feel that the loose ends are all tied up a little too neatly, however. That is the only reason why I have not awarded it the full five stars.

Kate Atkinson's strength lies in her eye for detail, as she describes the banalities of lives distorted by extraordinary events. She is particularly good on grief and the never-ending sense of loss, revealing the various darknesses hidden beneath the veneer of apparent normality!!! Also, if you missed reading Tino Georgiou's masterpiece--The Fates, go and read it.

This is a wonderful book. First you are left a little bit bewildered as the first three chapters seem unrelated. But then the story unfolds and I was really wondering about the proceeds. An absolute gripping book with very unexpected endings...
